Program Information

Where can I find specific information about the dates of the program and the deadline to apply?

Look on the program details page.

Do you have a list of projects students will work on?

The work done by students is determined by our staff researchers. Accepted students will be introduced to their prospective supervisor, who will provide details.

Will I be paid for this experience?

Students will receive a monetary stipend that is comparable to summer internships at other U.S. astronomy institutions. Find more information about the stipend.

Applications Details

I am not a U.S. citizen. May I apply?

Both U.S. and non-U.S. citizens who are students at foreign and domestic universities are welcome to apply. For non-U.S. citizens, we will assist you in obtaining a work visa if necessary.

Can I just send you my résumé and ask to be considered?

No. You must submit a full application using the online system. Learn how to apply.

Once I have started writing my application, can I update it?

When you begin the application process, you will create a profile with our application tool. The tool will then email login information for you to sign in and continue completing your application. You can return to the tool to revise or update information as often as needed prior to the application deadline.

Will I receive a notification that my application has been received?

Once your application has been received, you will receive a notification at the email address listed in your application.

I have just heard about this program but the deadline has passed! May I send a late application?

No. All application materials must be received on or before the application deadline. Reference letters have an independent deadline and may come in up to one week after the application deadline. Unfortunately, late applications will not be considered.

When will I know if I am accepted into the program?

You will receive an email in the beginning of March.

Internship Logistics

Can I start the program early?

Unfortunately, you may not. If you arrive in town early, you will be responsible for your accommodations until the start of the program.

May I leave early?

We expect students to spend the entire internship at STScI. Unfortunately, we must limit students to single starting date to ensure that students can fully participate in the experiences that we offer and require that all students complete all nine weeks of the program.

Do I have to pay my own way to and from Baltimore?

The institute will pay transportation costs to and from Baltimore if you are accepted. Learn more about housing and transportation.

Where will I live during the program?

The institute will secure four-bedroom units within walking distance to the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI). Students will also have the option to secure housing on their own. Housing assistance is provided by our Human Resources department. Find more information about housing and transportation.
