Free format text We propose 398 parallel orbits to constrain the Hydrogen reionization edge in emission that marks the transition from a neutral to a fully ionized IGM at a predicted redshifts \zion~eq5--10. The edge is due to a rapid change in recombination from the Hydrogen Lyman series at z~eq\zion Baltz Etal 1998), which leaves a sharp signal in the recombination spectrum \cge 3 dex below the Zodiacal background. \zion is one of the most important remaining unknown quantities in cosmology. HST is unique in that it can constrain this signal with the STIS CCD plus long-slit, covering Lambda~eq5240--10,270Angstrom\ or z~eq3.3--7.5. In Cycle 8, we took 28 STIS parallel orbits with contemporaneous calibrations to reduce systematics, and set limits to the Hydrogen edge signal of 2* 10^-21 erg/cm^2/s/Hz/sr at \zion\cge 5. This 28 orbit data set has not yet pushed STIS to its absolute calibration limits. We therefore propose parallels in ~260 high and sim100 lower latitude fields (1--3 orbits each) to map any variation in the Zodiacal spectrum across the sky. The combined data will allow us to improve constraints to the Hydrogen reionization edge at 5 \zion 7.5 by a factor of 4, within reach of theoretical predictions. We must develop this technique to learn how to optimally develop instruments for NGST to make this measurement with greater sensitivity and at higher redshifts (z~eq7.5--15). Questions ! Free format text Observing_Description: (1) STIS Parallels at high and lower Ecliptic and Galactic latitudes:\ In Cycle 8, we obtained 20 parallel fields at high Ecliptic and Galactic latitude (\vert\bEcl\vert, \vert\bII\vert\cge 30^o), in regions of known low \NH or low \EBminV (\AB 0.10 mag), \cge 4' away from any known SAO stars, and \cge 6.0*\re away from RC3 galaxies. This guarantees the cleanest possible background for the Hydrogen reionization edge project. In Cycle 10, we request further STIS parallels at both high and lower Ecliptic and Galactic latitudes, the latter in order to produce a better average, moderate-resolution Zodiacal spectrum all across the sky. The Table on page 2 summarizes the request. The significant number will allow us to median out discrete stars or galaxies which may fall on the STIS slit, and to get a good measurement of the Zodi+DGL component. mn (2) S/N and Time requirements for the parallels:\ The high latitude fields have SB(V)~eq22.5--23.3 \magarc, and the low latitude fields SB(V)~eq22.1--22.5\magarc. The ETC then predicts for each 2- orbit parallel a S/N~41 per pixel at Lambda~7500Angstrom\ after collapsing the ~1000 spectral pixels. The combined data set will have a S/N~600 per collapsed spectral pixel if global systematics (flat field and other vertical gradients) can be removed to within 0.2\ able to do due to a lack of exposures and fields. But in principle, we can set limits on the Hydrogen reionization edge feature at levels of 1.6* 10^- 4 of the zodiacal flux, or 1.5--5* 10^-22 erg/cm^2/s/Hz/sr, as indicated by the predictions for this experiment in Fig. 3, which are ~0.6 dex below the upper limits from the current Cycle 8 data. TO FIRST ORDER, THE TARGETS ARE SELECTED, THE DATA ARE TAKEN AND THE ORBITS ARE FILLED AS FOLLOWING: A) SELECTION OF PARALLEL FIELDS: During the first part of the Cycle, we preselect targets to get a maximum range in Galactic latitude, using the following two different generic targets: 1) HIGH-GALACTIC-LATITUDE, defined as ABS_BII > 30D 2) LOW-GALACTIC-LATITUDE, defined as LII = 180D +/- 135D, BII = 0D +/- 30D (i.e. the low Galactic latitude belt except for 90 deg around the GC). If this does not yield enough variation in Zodiacal foreground (which we also need for our purposes), then in the second half of the Cycle, we will change the target selection to get a maximum range in Zodiacal latitude, using the following two different generic targets: 3) HIGH-ECLIPTIC-LATITUDE, defined as ABS_BETA > 30D 4) LOW-ECLIPTIC-LATITUDE, defined as LAMBDA = 180D +/- 60D, BETA = 0D +/- 30D (i.e. the low latitude Zodiacal belt except for 240 deg around the Sun, ie. only selecting a 120D range around the anti-Sun for maximum darkness, and so staying away from the Earth's limb). B) TAKING OF THE PARALLEL FIELDS WITH STIS/CCD/G750L/52x2 or 52x0.5" slits: Taking the Cycle 9 primary exposure time distribution as guideline, our 398 Cycle parallels will be roughly split as following: High Latitude (|b_II|>30) Low Gal Latitude (10<|b_II|<30) 240 1-orbit fields = 240 orbits 94 1-orbit fields = 94 orbits 14 2-orbit fields = 28 orbits 6 2-orbit fields = 12 orbits 6 3-orbit fields = 18 orbits 2 3-orbit fields = 6 orbits ------------------------------------------------------------------ 260 Hi-Lat fields (286 orbits) + 102 Low-Lat fields (112 orbits) 362 fields in total (398 orbits in total) Part of the low-latitude fields will be deliberately pushed close to the Earth's limb (by using 2400 sec science spectra) with the 0.5" slit in order to get a better measure of a bland of O-I lines around 8457 Ang (and O-I lines at 7320 and 6300 Ang) that may be generated at high-altitudes (Windhorst et al. 2000), and that can be confused with the H-edge signal. This project will be three kinds of parallel fields, as following: 1) We need about 30 fields at LOW-GALACTIC-LATITUDE in the 0.5" slit to see any DGL emission lines that may contaminate our H-edge signal. These also are pushed close to the Earth's limb in order to see the bland of O-I (?) lines at 8547 Ang at higher resultion, and any other lines that may contaminate our signal. We cover 1--5 orbit cases, which are in visit 1--5. We give this part highest priority, and will turn it off as soon as we have enough LOW-GALACTIC-LATITUDE fields with the 0.5" slit. 2) We need about 360 fields at LOW-GALACTIC-LATITUDE in the 2.0" slit to constrain the H-edge signal at maximum S/N across the sky. These will NOT be pushed close to the Earth's limb, but forced into DARKTIME. We cover 1--5 orbit cases, which are in visit 6--10. We give this part the middle priority, and will change its priority if needed. These will be mostly 1-orbit cases, although we will follow and accept the natural orbital distribution of prmaries in Cycle 10. 3) We need about 70 fields at LOW-GALACTIC-LATITUDE in the 2.0" slit to see any DGL emission lines that may contaminate our H-edge signal. These will NOT be pushed close to the Earth's limb, but forced into DARKTIME as in 2). We cover 1--5 orbit cases, which are in visit 11--15. We give this part the lowest priority, and will bump it up in priority if halfway through the Cycle if we don't get enough of them. C) PARALLEL ORBIT FILLING: Cycle 10 project 9066 has been allocated 398 parallels at high and low Ecliptic and Galactic latitudes. Through our 36 orbit Cycle 8 pilot program 8260, we learned how to optimally schedule these STIS parallels and their required on-orbit calibrations with RPS2. Analysis of the Cycle 8 spectra and experimenting with RPS2 shows that our typical Cycle 10 parallel orbit should consist of the following calibrations and science exposures: The exposures are numbered as VON, where V=the above visit number for each latitude case (V=1--5), O=the orbit number in each visit (O=1--5 AND O=> 1000; http://garnet.stsci.edu/STIS/models/G2V.gif). Zodiacal dust particles with sizes <1Mu may not change the high frequency part of the solar spectrum around 1Mu drastically, but they can slightly modify the global Zodiacal spectral gradient due to non-grey scattering. This we will quantify through a careful comparison of the Zodiacal spectrum to the known solar spectrum. We will separate the Zodiacal spectrum from the much fainter DGL spectrum, using the lower latitude parallels (i.e. b~20--35degrees) which have a quite different Zodi/DGL ratio. A slightly reddened solar spectrum will be subtracted from each STIS spectrum, after appropriately scaling to avoid oversubtracting, following Bernstein Etal 2000b). sn (3.b) The DGL Component (RB).\ Possible high spatial frequency structures in the DGL are a concern at SB- levels of ~26--27 mag/arcsec^2 (Szomoru & Guhathakurta 1998; Guhathakurta & Tyson 1989). The Cycle 8 parallels were selected at high Galactic latitudes (\EBminV 0.01 and low \NH), and so the DGL there should be rather faint (\cge 28-- 30\magarc), as the deepest surveys at high latitude have shown (e.g., Tyson 1988, Williams Etal 1996). Since the DGL likely bears the spectral signatures of early-type (O and B) stars in our Galaxy, we do not expect a large spectral feature at 0.6--1Mu from the stellar population that causes the DGL. We will fit a smoothed OB star template to match the DGL spectra from the lower latitude fields to locate any suspect features, and make improved DGL spectra to subtract from the high latitude fields. The EW of Zodiacal features in the higher resolution STIS/G750M 0"pt 5 slit spectra will be used to help isolate the different DGL components in each field (Bernstein Etal 2000b). sn (3.c) The EBL component RB).\ The EBL should be at levels fainter than I~eq27.5 mag/arcsec^2 (Bernstein Etal 2000a), because the galaxy counts are now known to permanently converge with a sub- critical slope Alpha<=0.4 for B>= 25--26 mag (Metcalfe Etal 1996) and for I>= 24--25 mag (Williams Etal 1996). The best estimate of the ~ 1Mu EBL by Hauser Etal (1998) amounts to 4.7* 10^-20 erg/cm^2/s/Angstrom/arcsec^2 and Bernstein Etal 2000) similarly amounts to SB(1Mu)~27.5 AB-\magarc. Since the EBL is featureless (\S 2.a) and faint, no EBL template needs to be subtracted from the collapsed STIS spectra in order to find a Hydrogen reionization edge. mn (4.a) Construction of the final spectral stack (RAW, RB).\ After subtraction of the best model Zodiacal and DGL components from the STIS spectra in each bin, we will make a carefully weighted clipped average (using one-sided 2.5-Sigma clipping) of all spectral images across the sky. This should further remove any discrete objects that may have persisted in any of the long-slit spectra. The end-result is a ~426 orbit spectral stack (a la Fig. 4), but with the Zodiacal and DGL components removed. sn (4.b) How to search for the Lyman Hydrogen reionization edge in the STIS spectra (RAW, RB, JM).\ Next, we will collapse all 1000 spatial pixels (~0"pt 05 each) along the slit of the final stack into one 1-dim STIS sky spectrum (c.f., Fig. 4). We will see if any significant step survives in this collapsed STIS spectrum after we subtract the best fit scaled templates of the Zodiacal and DGL spectra, and check if any step is close to a weak known feature in the Zodiacal spectrum (as compared to the solar spectrum), or to an atmospheric O-I line. We will sum large wavelength swaths at wavelengths both shorter and longer than any visible Ly-alpha edge. One advantage is that the frequency direction of the step is known. We move these swaths in a ``sliding rule'' manner to find the most significant edge in the collapsed sky spectrum, if such an edge is not directly obvious from the data.
