In 2009, STScI director Matt Mountain appointed the JWST Advisory Council (JSTAC) to advise the STScI on the Institute's readiness to support science operations with JWST, the implementation of NASA's science policies, and other matters related to the general observer program. Garth Illingworth is the JSTAC Chair. We provide links below to the JSTAC charter and membership. Garth and the members of the JSTAC would welcome comments and concerns from future Webb observers.

February 2012 Update

The JSTAC met at STScI on June 1 and 2 to review development status.
December 1-2, 2010: The Third Meeting of the James Webb Space Telescope Advisory Council (JSTAC)
The third meeting of the JSTAC was held at the STScI on Dec.1-2, 2010. The council reviewed the recommendations of the ICRP report and NASA's response from Eric Smith and the new Project Manager, Bill Ochs. NASA and STScI scientists presented reports on the primary mirror development and outreach to the astronomical community.

May 27-28, 2010: The Second Meeting of the James Webb Space Telescope Advisory Council (JSTAC)
The second meeting of the JSTAC was held at the STScI on May 27-28, 2010. The council reviewed the considerable progress in both the JWST Project and the SOC development since the meeting in November. It also considered ways to provide science data to the community early in mission in order to maximize Webb's lifetime productivity over its nominal lifetime.

The first meeting of the JSTAC appointed by Matt Mountain was held at the STScI on November 4-5, 2009. In addition to hearing briefings on the technical and scientific progress of the project, the JSTAC discussed and made recommendations on the NASA science policies and their implementation. The JSTAC will meet semi-annually to advise on the Institute's readiness to conduct the Webb science mission.
