STScI at the AAS 233: January 2019, Seattle, WA

The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) will be at the 233rd AAS meeting in Seattle, Washington with an exhibit booth and several associated events highlighting the missions we support for the science community.There will be technical presentations in instrument sessions, a wide variety of science presentations, press releases, NASA Hyperwall talks, and ample time to confer with HubbleWebbWFIRST, MAST, Human Resources, and other experts throughout the meeting and in the exhibit booth.

Institute staff representing the HubbleWebb, and WFIRST missions will be available at the Institute booth to provide information on new developments and updated status of these missions, and also to describe our upcoming initiatives for user community support. Stop by the MAST table to learn how to use the Portal to find, analyze, and retrieve your data. Learn how to search for the newly added Webb planned proposals and find out about other new features and services available for data retrieval, like the MAST API.

Our interactive area this year will feature daily sessions of augmented reality, virtual reality, and touchscreen demonstrations. Come visualize the three observatories with augmented reality, or use virtual reality to explore a protoplanetary disk or throw stars into a black hole. There will also be mission demonstrations of support tools for proposing and observing with Hubble and Webb.

Public Event: Hubble Deep Field Collaboration

Join us for a presentation of spectacular astronomy visuals set to captivating music, including the West Coast premiere of the film "Deep Field: The Impossible Magnitude of Our Universe." Composer Eric Whitacre’s Hubble-inspired symphony, "Deep Field," comes to life onscreen with NASA images and Institute-created scientific visualizations from the night sky to the edge of the observable universe. The film also features an 8,000-member virtual choir of singers from around the globe. Additionally, the program includes a curated selection of shorter pieces of celestial and aural delights from astronomers and artists. Each piece will be introduced for the astronomical and/or musical content, including a video introduction by Eric Whitacre. The music of the heavens never looked or sounded so good!

STScI Town Hall

With the decadal survey under way, the winter 2019 AAS meeting will represent an ideal opportunity to ensure that all astronomers are engaged in shaping the future of our profession. At the Town Hall, we will engage the community of forward-looking initiatives and present new opportunities on our existing and upcoming missions and data archives that are designed to advance astrophysics into the 2020s. The Town Hall will present upcoming mission activities, including open science opportunities for all with WFIRST and Hubble research highlights and future initiatives. There will be presentations on existing products and programs that support the community, including inclusion best practices, outreach products and opportunities, and new exoplanet data tools. We will also share some work of the Makidon Optics Lab on advancing technologies for high-contrast imaging with segmented telescopes.

NASA's Universe of Learning Open Splinter Meeting

NASA's UoL creates and delivers science-, audience-, and learning-driven resources and experiences. These are designed to engage and immerse learners of all ages and backgrounds in exploring the universe for themselves. The project is the result of a unique partnership between the Space Telescope Science Institute, Caltech/IPAC, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, and Sonoma State University, and is one of 24 competitively selected cooperative agreements within the NASA Science Mission Directorate Science Activation program.

This open splinter meeting is aimed at astronomers interested in supporting NASA's UoL's efforts to advance the NASA Science Mission Directorate's objectives for STEM learning. To achieve these goals, NASA's UoL is continuing to expand on its work to engage with astronomers and other subject matter experts (SMEs), who are essential for ensuring that the science content presented in our products and programs are timely, accurate, and reflect the current astrophysics themes driving current research. During this open splinter meeting, we will provide a brief overview of the NASA's UoL program, seek feedback on our current astrophysics themes and several of our products and programs, and present a menu of opportunities for SME involvement.
