Soderblom Space Telescope Science Institute N 10849( 10) - 08/29/06 14:15 - [ 2] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Abstract We propose to use the high-contrast capability of the NICMOS coronagraph to image a sample of newly discovered circumstellar disks associated with Sun-like stars. These systems were identified by their strong thermal infrared (IR) emission with the Spitzer Space Telescope as part of the Spitzer Legacy Science program titled "The Formation and Evolution of Planetary Systems" (FEPS, P.I.: M.Meyer). Modeling of the thermal excess emission from the spectral energy distributions alone cannot distinguish between narrowly confined high-opacity disks and broadly distributed, low-opacity disks. By resolving light scattered by the circumstellar material, our proposed NICMOS observations can break this degeneracy, thus revealing the conditions under which planet formation processes are occuring or have occured. For three of our IR-excess stars that have known radial-velocity planets, resolved imaging of the circumstellar debris disks may further offer an unprecedented view of planet-disk interactions in an extrasolar planetary system. Even non-detections of the light scattered by the circumstellar material will place strong constraints on the disk geometries, ruling out disk models with high optical depth. Unlike previous disk imaging programs, our program contains a well-defined sample of ~1 solar mass stars covering a range of ages from 3 Myr to 3 Gyr, thus allowing us to study the evolution of disks from primordial to debris for the first time. The results from our program will greatly improve our understanding of the architecture of debris disks around Sun-like stars, and will create a morphological context for the existence of our own solar system. This proposal is for a continuation of an approved Cycle 14 program (GO/10527, P.I.: D. Hines). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10849( 10) - 08/29/06 14:15 - [ 3] Observations Description ------------------------ This program follows the precepts of GO 10527. I. NUMBER OF TARGETS/VISITS/ORBITS: We observe 23 targets in 44 Visits. Targets 1-21 are 21 circumstellar disk candidates. Targets 22-23 are PSF calibration stars (chosen by J-H colors and brightness, and have been previously observed with HST/NICMOS). All disk targets are observed in linked visit pairs; sequentially numbered: visits: (01, 02), (03, 04)... The scheduling of the first visit in each linked pair has now absolute orientation or timing constraints. The second visit in each visit-pair has two lined constraints to the first visit as follows: (a) ORIENT FROM. We actually can allow *FOUR* ORIENT FROM ranges: (- 150 to -120), (-60 to -30), (+30 to +60), (+120 to +150) degrees But, of course, APT only allows us to specify one. In all cases we supply one which APT indicated was schedulable. The program PC can freely change this to one of the other allowable ranges, if in implementation the ORIENT FROM range supplied is actually unschedulable.--> WE PREFER Orient From ranges of EXACTLY -135, -45, +45, or +135 deg IF POSSIBLE (b) Timing linkage. We place a taming linkage on the second visit of each visit pair (GROUP WITHIN) such that the two visits execute in sequential spacecraft orbits. The two PSF star Visits (43 and 44) have no scheduling constraints. VISIT STRUCTURE: All visits begin with an ACQ (target acquisition mode) exposure. ACQ times have been computed to an exposure depth of 77, 000e- in the central pixel. Filters are selected based upon the target brightness. After the target is slewed into the corongraphic hole we take repeated F110W multiaccums. We use STEP32 for targets H > 5.8, and STEP16 for targets H < 5.8. In general, we use a NUMEXP construct to "repeat" all but the last coronagraphic image. The last is written separately and its NSAMP adjusted to best "fill" the visibility period. The program PC is free to adjust the NSAMP on this last corongraphic exposure as needed if scheduling difficulties arise. We then slew the target out of the coronagraph and execute for short "out of hole" images in a square dither pattern using POS TARGS.
