West University of Hawaii at Hilo N CoI: Dr. Andrew Zirm The Johns Hopkins University N ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Abstract A surprising result has emerged from the ACS Virgo Cluster Survey (ACSVCS), a program to obtain ACS/WFC gz imaging for a large, unbiased sample of 100 early-type galaxies in the Virgo Cluster. On subarcsecond scales (i.e., <0.1"-1"), the HST brightness profiles vary systematically from the brightest giants (which have nearly constant surface brightness cores) to the faintest dwarfs (which have compact stellar nuclei). Remarkably, the fraction of galaxy mass contributed by the nuclei in the faint galaxies is identical to that contributed by supermassive black holes in the bright galaxies (0.2%). These findings strongly suggest that a single mechanism is responsible for both types of Central Massive Object: most likely internally or externally modulated gas inflows that feed central black holes or lead to the formation of "nuclear star clusters". Understanding the history of gas accretion, star formation and chemical enrichment on subarcsecond scales has thus emerged as the single most pressing question in the study of nearby galactic nuclei, either active or quiescent. We propose an ambitious HST program (199 orbits) that constitutes the next, obvious step forward: high-resolution, ultraviolet (WFPC2/F300W) and infrared (NIC1/F160W) imaging for the complete ACSVCS sample. By capitalizing on HST's unique ability to provide high-resolution images with a sharp and stable PSF at UV and IR wavelengths, we will leverage the existing optical HST data to obtain the most complete picture currently possible for the history of star formation and chemical enrichment on these small scales. Equally important, this program will lead to a significant improvement in the measured structural parameters and density distributions for the stellar nuclei and the underlying galaxies, and provide a sensitive measure of "frosting" by young stars in the galaxy cores. By virtue of its superb image quality and stable PSF, NICMOS is the sole instrument capable of the IR observations proposed here. In the case of the WFPC2 observations, high-resolution UV imaging (< 0.1") is a capability unique to HST, yet one that could be lost at any any time. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11083( 19) - 16-Jun-2008 14:13:38 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ The essential elements of this program are high-resolution imaging and precise surface photometry at UV and IR wavelengths. Because ACS/WFC images are already available for these galaxies, our choice of filters is driven by the need to leverage the existing optical data to give the best possible measurements of the stellar age and abundance distributions in the cores. NICMOS is the obvious choice for the IR observations given its excellent image quality (strehl $\simeq$ 0.9) and stable PSF; the NIC1 camera is strongly preferred over NIC2 or NIC3 on the basis of its smaller pixel scale and well-sampled PSF. Of the broadband filters available with NIC1, our simulations show that F160W provides the best metallicity sensitivity (see Fig.~4). [Note that this figure shows predictions from a single set of population synthesis models [6] but, in practice, ages and metallicities will be derived using all available models to test for robustness against model systematics.] UV imaging is needed to characterize multiple stellar populations in the cores. Relative to the U-band, this region has far superior sensitivity to the presence of young (T < 1 Gyr) stars [28]. Experiments with a variety of WFPC2 filters reveal that F300W is the best compromise between count rate and age sensitivity (i.e., it is preferred over either F218W or F255W). Note also that the WFPC2/F300W combination gives superior angular resolution than the existing ACS images, which will allow the measurement of improved structural parameters and density profiles. Observations for the full ACSVCS sample are needed to identify the subtle variations in the central structure of the galaxies as a function of magnitude [8, 11, 12]. To accurately decouple the effects of age and metallicity on the SEDs, we require colors good to approximately 0.05 mag. Integration of the ACSVCS surface brightness profiles yield total magnitudes of 13.2 < g < 19.2 mag inside a 3 arcsec aperture. [At a declination of ~ 12 deg., target visibility for Virgo is 54 min; including various overheads reduces the total available exposure time per orbit to approximately 2400 sec.] In practice, the images will be CR-SPLIT (2x1200 sec in F300W and 4x500 sec + 2x200 sec in F160W) to ensure adequate removal of cosmic rays and guard against saturation of the central pixels in bright galaxies. Thus, we shall follow the ACSVCS strategy of devoting a single orbit per instrument (two orbits per galaxy) to each target. The photocenter of each galaxy will be positioned at the geometric centers of the UV and IR detectors (i.e., the PC1-FIX and NIC1-FIX apertures). This approach will provide areal coverage of the galaxy adequate to measure luminosity and color profiles out to distances of R ~ 15 arcsec (1.2 kpc) in the IR and R ~ 140 arcsec (11 kpc) in the UV. There are no requirements on ORIENT. Our total request is for 199 orbits (i.e., suitable NIC1 images exist for one galaxy). Given the joint requirements on angular resolution and PSF stability, HST is the only instrument capable of carrying out this program. At IR wavelengths, there will be no other telescope capable of these observations available until the launch of JWST. At shorter wavelengths, no other facility --- existing or planned --- is capable of high-resolution imaging (FWHM < 0.1") in the near UV, so these observations are not only unique, but urgent. Note that ground-based spectroscopy is {\it not} an option: a search for tip/tilt stars bright enough 11083( 19) - 16-Jun-2008 14:13:38 - [ 3] to allow even low-strehl, integral-field spectroscopy with NIFS or GMOS and the Gemini laser guide star system uncovered a suitable star in just a single galaxy (b = 74 deg. for Virgo).
