Peng Space Telescope Science Institute N ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Abstract The majority of QSOs are known to reside in centers of galaxies that look like ellipticals. Numerical simulations have shown that remnants of galaxy mergers often closely resemble elliptical galaxies. However, it is still strongly debated whether the majority of QSO host galaxies are indeed the result of relatively recent mergers or whether they are completely analogous to inactive ellipticals to which nothing interesting has happened recently. To address this question, we recently obtained deep HST ACS images for five QSO host galaxies that were classified morphologically as ellipticals (GO-10421). This pilot study revealed striking signs of tidal interactions such as ripples, tidal tails, and warped disks that were not detected in previous studies. Our observations show that at least some "elliptical" QSO host galaxies are the products of relatively recent merger events rather than old galaxies formed at high redshift. However, the question remains whether the host galaxies of classical QSOs are truly distinct from inactive ellipticals and whether there is a connection between the merger events we detect and the current nuclear activity. We must therefore place our results into a larger statistical context. We are currently conducting an HST archival study of inactive elliptical galaxies (AR-10941) to form a control sample. We now propose to obtain deep HST/WFPC2 images of 13 QSOs whose host galaxies are classified as normal ellipticals. Comparing the results for both samples will help us determine whether classical QSOs reside in normal elliptical galaxies or not. Our recent pilot study of five QSOs indicates that we can expect exciting results and deep insights into the host galaxy morphology also for this larger sample of QSOs. A statistically meaningful sample will help us determine the true fraction of QSO hosts that suffered strong tidal interactions and thus, whether a merger is indeed a requirement to trigger nuclear activity in the most luminous AGNs. In addition to our primary science observations with WFPC2, we will obtain NICMOS3 parallel observations with the overall goal to select and characterize galaxy populations at high redshifts. The imaging will be among the deepest NICMOS images: These NICMOS images are expected to go to a limit a little over 1 magnitude brighter than HUDF-NICMOS data, but over 13 widely separated fields, with a total area about 1.5 times larger than HUDF-NICMOS. This separation means that the survey will tend to average out effects of cosmic varience. The NICMOS3 images will have sufficient 11101( 4) - 07-Feb-2008 14:18:33 - [ 2] resolution for an initial characterization of galaxy morphologies, which is currently one of the most active and promising areas in approaching the problem of the formation of the first massive galaxies. The depth and area coverage of our proposed NICMOS observations will also allow a careful study of the mass function of galaxies at these redshifts. This provides a large and unbiased sample, selected in terms of stellar mass and unaffected by cosmic variance, to study the on-going star formation activity as a function of mass (i.e. integrated star formation) at this very important epoch. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ We will obtain deep imaging observations of 13 QSO host galaxies using WFPC2 WF2 with the F606W filter. Our pilot study of five QSO host galaxies has shown that we can detect fine-structure features at a S/N of 5 or higher per resolution element in the hosts with total integration times of ~5000 s using ACS WFC. As the sensitivity of ACS is higher, we will need longer integration times to achieve comparable depths with WFPC2. Although the PC chip provides higher resolution, we chose the WF2 chip for its higher sensitivity to the low-surface-brightness structures we are looking for. The broad-V filter F606W was chosen as it spans the largest range in wavelength (~1580A), thus providing the best throughput. Observations in this filter will also provide some color information when used in conjuction with archival data. Given their declinations, all targets are visible for 52 or 53 minutes per orbit. The central pixels of the QSOs will inevitably be saturated with long exposures. Therefore, we will take short exposures of 6-40 s (depending on the magnitude of the QSO) at each dither position. Thus, an unsaturated image of the QSO is obtained, ensuring an accurate measurement of the central flux density. To avoid saturating the inner regions of the host galaxies under the wings of the point-spread function (PSF), we will split the long exposures into several exposures per orbit. Using the pos-targ equivalent of the WFPC2-box dither pattern (in four subsequent orbits) will allow us to effectively reject cosmic rays and hot pixels and optimize the PSF sampling. In the long exposures, the central pixel will bloom. Therefore, we will additionally obtain a medium (saturated but without blooming) exposure at each dither position. We typically can get ~1, 730 s total integration time per orbit. In order to increase schedulability, we limit visits to 3 orbits. Therefore, in two visits totalling 5 orbits per target, we can obtain total exposures of about 8, 650 s. The form of the WFPC PSF depends critically on the position on the chip as well as the spectral energy distribution of the target source. Although these effects are taken into account in synthetic PSFs produced by e.g., TINYTIM, they do not provide a good fit for the detailed study we are aiming for. Thus, in addition to the 65 orbits needed to image the 13 QSO host galaxies, we will spend one orbit to obtain a deep, unsaturated stellar PSF using the F606W filter with a star centered on exactly the same part of the chip as all the target objects. We will obtain both unsaturated images of the PSF core and deep images of the wings of the white dwarf GRW+70D5824. This star was chosen as its B-V color of 0.09 is comparable to the average color of our QSO sample. To avoid contamination of the PSF by scattering of another nearby bright object, we carefully checked that no bright star lies within 30 arcsec. We will carry 11101( 4) - 07-Feb-2008 14:18:33 - [ 3] out four exposures of different lengths at the same pos-targ dither positions as used for the QSOs to improve the sampling of the PSF. The four exposures with different lengths will insure that we obtain both unsaturated images of the PSF core and deep images of the wings. From that, a composite PSF of very high dynamic range will be created. In addition, we will obtain NICMOS3 images in parallel observations, for each target in the F110W filter and F160W filter. Within one orbit, two exposures are taken using MULTIACCUM, SAMP-SEQ=SPARS64, and NSAMP=20 (F160W) and 25 (F110W). The F110W exposure will be taken in the later part of the orbit to be farther away from any SAA passage. Thus, we can typically get total integration times (within the five orbits) of ~7500 s in F110W and ~5900 s in F160W. If possible, SAA-impacted orbits should be avoided. Note that for Visit 27, no NICMOS parallel observations are included because it contains only one orbit and we dither within this orbit.
