As demonstrated by the 25 snapshots obtained so far in Cycle14 and Cycle15 these systems frequently exhibit strong gravitational lensing as well as spectacular examples of violent galaxy interactions. The proposed observations will provide important constraints on the cluster mass distributions, the physical nature of galaxy-galaxy and galaxy-gas interactions in cluster cores, and a set of optically bright, lensed galaxies for further 8-10m spectroscopy. All of our primary science goals require only the detection and characterisation of high-surface-brightness features and are thus achievable even at the reduced sensitivity of WFPC2. Because of their high redshift and thus compact angular scale our target clusters are less adversely affected by the smaller field of view of WFPC2 than more nearby systems. Acknowledging the broad community interest in this sample we waive our data rights for these observations. Due to a clerical error at STScI our approved Cycle15 SNAP program was barred from execution for 3 months and only 6 observations have been performed to date - reinstating this SNAP at Cycle16 priority is of paramount importance to reach meaningful statistics. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ ?We propose WFPC2/F606W observations of the 100 MACS and SMACS clusters with X-ray luminosities above 6 x 10^{44} erg/s and redshift above 0.3 not already observed with HST/ACS (complete sample of 143 in total). The targets are uniformly distributed over the high-Galactic latitude sky (|b|>20deg) making this an ideal SNAP sample. Prior to the start of Cycle~16 we will remove all F606W observations that will already have been performed by then for program SNAP-10875. 11103( 12) - 29-Apr-2008 12:37:44 - [ 2] We intend to perform the proposed observations in a 4-point box pattern (to ensure the best cosmic ray rejection and hot pixel rejection) of 300s exposure each with the F606W filter. The chosen exposure time is the same as that used for the ACS/WFC observations of SNAP10491/10875. Owing to the lower sensitivity of WFPC2 the resulting images will not reach the same depth as the data obtained for MACS clusters to date; they will, however, be fully sufficient for us to pursue the main science goals of this proposal which all revolve around high-surface-brightness features. The filter is the same as that used in our previous surveys but represents a bluer rest bandpass for the mean redshift of 0.4 for our MACS/SMACS sample compared to 0.13 in Cycles 8 and 9. This filter represents a good compromise between grasp, emission line contamination and K-correction for cluster members and the lensed background galaxies. Only at the highest redshifts (z>6), where the Lyman-break leaves the F606W bandpass, will the proposed snapshots be insensitive to a lensed object. Over the majority of the redshift regime where lensing is most probable for a z=0.3-0.4 lens (i.e. z=1-4), the equivalent rest frame light from the background object is 1200-3000A. This is the same observing strategy as used successfully for SNAP-10491 and SNAP-10875. ?We will place the dominant galaxy near the WFPC2 aimpoint WFALL to maximise the coverage of the region of any likely Einstein radius (15-40") around the galaxy. Although the WFPC2 chip geometry will cause some features to be missed, the roll angle of these observations is not critical since no science goal of this study requires comprehensive coverage of any given individual target.
