Observable at resolutions unapproachable in other galaxies, the GC provides an unparalleled opportunity to improve our understanding of the interrelationships of massive stars, young stellar clusters, warm and hot ionized gases, molecular clouds, large scale magnetic fields, and black holes. We propose the first large-scale hydrogen Paschen alpha line survey of the GC using NICMOS on the Hubble Space Telescope. This survey will lead to a high resolution and high sensitivity map of the Paschen alpha line emission in addition to a map of foreground extinction, made by comparing Paschen alpha to radio emission. This survey of the inner 75 pc of the Galaxy will provide an unprecedented and complete search for sites of massive star formation. In particular, we will be able to (1) uncover the distribution of young massive stars in this region, (2) locate the surfaces of adjacent molecular clouds, (3) determine important physical parameters of the ionized gas, (4) identify compact and ultra-compact HII regions throughout the GC. When combined with existing Chandra and Spitzer surveys as well as a wealth of other multi-wavelength observations, the results will allow us to address such questions as where and how massive stars form, how stellar clusters are disrupted, how massive stars shape and heat the surrounding medium, and how various phases of this medium are interspersed. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ We will obtain the first large-scale survey of the Galactic Center (GC) in the Paschen-Alpha hydrogen emission line utilizing NIC3 with the F187N and F190N filters. This survey will cover approximately the central 32 X 13 arcminutes of our Galaxy (corresponding to 75 X 30 pc at the distance of the GC). The map will be the result of 576 pointed observations taken in 144 visits, with one orbit per visit. The precise field of view has been slightly altered from the Phase I proposal to maximize the science return. We have moved ~10 orbits from 11120( 9) - 25-Apr-2008 13:11:34 - [ 2] the region near l=359.75 b=0.075, which lies off the central galactic plane, and used them to extend our coverage along the galactic by a few arcminutes. The primary goal in devising our mapping strategy is to efficiently map as large an area as possible within each orbit. All of the orbits are identical, each consisting of a 2X2 NIC3 map. This pattern enables us to have a single guide star acquisition per orbit. At each of the four field positions we will make 4 dithers, observing in both the F187N and the F190N filters at each position. In Phase I we had proposed to obtain 6 dithers, but the overheads as calculated by APT Orbit Planner in Phase II made it necessary for us to only obtain 4 dithers per position. We will use large (6 arcsec) dither offsets to obtain a 29.5 pixel overlap which will enable both subpixel sampling of the PSF in orthogonal array coordinates and sufficient array coverage for construction of the large mosaic. We have assumed that the bottom 15 pixels of the NIC3 array will be unusable due to vignetting and distortions as described in the NICMOS documentation and we have adjusted our map accordingly. In order to avoid gaps in the final mosaic we must constrain the orientation of the observations. We have found that during the large visibility windows for this program (February-May 2008) there are large periods during which the telescope orientation will be ~270 deg. Therefore we have constrained all the orbits to have an orientation of 270 degrees to insure that we have consistent coverage throughout the map. Each frame will have an integration time of 48 sec, giving a total integration time per pixel on the sky of 192 sec in each filter.
