Snow University of Colorado at Boulder Y ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Abstract With the COS, we will be able to observe interstellar spectra in a new regime, translucent clouds, for atomic, ionic, and molecular lines and bands, and extinction curves. The COS will allow us to observe stars with total visual extinctions up to 10 magnitudes, and the grain size indicator Rv up to 4.5. In translucent clouds we expect to see the transition from neutral and ionized carbon to mostly C I, and then from there, we should expect to see carbon increasingly locked up in molecular form, as CO. Other species are expected to make similar transitions, so we should find detectable abundances of molecules such as H2O, OH, CS, CH2, SiO, and others; also, lower ionization fractions of the metallic elements - and higher depletions of those elements as well. Given that we expect to find higher depletions, we should see an altered grain size distribution, which may show up in the extinction curves, probably as lower far-UV extinction than in diffuse clouds. Finally, we will search for neutral PAHs in absorption, as diffuse bands in the UV, paralleling the optical DIBs (which are thought by some scientists to be formed by singly-ionized PAHs). In translucent clouds, models show that the PAHs will be neutral, not in cationic form. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ 30 Orbits on reddened point source targets for cold ISM GTO program. For all targets the STIS and COS online ETCs were run using Low resolution IUE and FOS data. ETC IDs are included in the comment sections of the exposures. The special requirement of CVZ is requested for HD 204827 and BD+63 1964 as high signal to noise ratios are critical for measuring weak absorption lines. HD 204827 is a spectroscopic binary; the time constraints on Visits 04 and 05 are needed to acquire spectra at a different phase than Vistis 02 and 03. For all echelle settings this is due to my use of the 0.2x0.2FP aperatures. When I use the standard 0.2x0.2 aperature no BOT warnings exist. The FP aperatures are used because of the the existance of broad and wavy features seen in previous STIS schelle modes. At least two different settings for each central wavelength are desired to verify observed features. Low dispersion IUE from the target data were used in the online exposure time calculators to verify target safety. Running the online ETC shows that the count rates for this target are just below the screening limits for non-variable sources. BD +63 1964 is a B0 II star, so it should have a strong stellar wind, but otherwise is not known to be a variable star. Stellar winds from hot stars can cause spectral variations with time (P Cygni lines often display variable line profiles), but not variations in flux, luminosity, SED, or effective temperature. We have no reason to expect variations in UV flux. Also, examining IUE data sets taken over the span of a year shows the target flux to be changing by only a few percent from one observation to another (which could be due to flux calibrations). Because of this we do not believe that the target is a saftey concern. The special requirement of CVZ is requested for BD+63 1964 as high signal to noise ratios are critical for measuring weak absorption lines. The last 2 exposures of this visit are to observe the longest wavelength H2 band near 1108 angstoms We are unable at the present time to assess the safety of this exposure as the sensitivities for segment B in the G140L mode are unknown. Running the online ETC shows that the count rates for this target are just below the screening limits for non-variable sources. BD +31 643 is a B5 V star, so it should not have a strong stellar wind; is not a Be star (which would only affect its spectrum in any case); and is not known to be variable in any way. It has a circumstellar disk and is listed as a optical double, but neither aspect gives cause for concern. Also, examining IUE data sets taken over the span of 2 years shows the target flux to be changing by only a few percent from one observation to another (which could be due to flux calibrations). Because of this we do not believe that the target is a saftey concern. For all echelle settings this is due to my use of the 0.2x0.2FP aperatures. When I use the standard 0.2x0.2 aperature no BOT warnings exist. The FP aperatures are used because of broad and wavy features seen in previous STIS echelle modes. At least two different settings for each central wavelength are desired to verify observed features.
