11541( 9) - 10-Nov-2009 18:16:25 - [ 1] HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE OBSERVING PROGRAM 11541 Version: 9 Check-in Time: 10-Nov-2009 18:16:25 STScI Edit Number: 4 Title COS-GTO: COOL, WARM AND HOT GAS IN THE COSMIC WEB AND IN GALAXY HALOS ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Type Cycle GTO/COS 17 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Investigators Contact? PI: Dr. James C. Green University of Colorado at Boulder CoI: Dr. Cynthia Froning University of Colorado at Boulder N CoI: Dr. Blair D. Savage University of Wisconsin - Madison Y ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Abstract COS G130M and G160M 20, 000 resolution observations will be obtained for 17 QSOs to study cool, warm and hot gas in the cosmic web and in galaxy halos. 5 QSOs with z from 0.177 to 0.574 and sum z = 1.68 will be observed with S/N = 40-50 per resolution element. 12 QSOs with z = 0.286 to 0.669 and sum z = 5.57 will be observed with S/N = 30-40. The observations will allow a wide range of IGM studies including determining the frequency of occurrence of the different types of absorption systems detected, along with studies of the physical conditions and elemental abundances in the different systems. Special emphasis will be given to a study of the properties of highly ionized IGM as traced by O VI, O V, O IV, N V, and C IV. The high S/N of the observations will allow a search for broad Lyman alpha absorption and weak metal line absorption that can be crucial for the evaluation of physical conditions and elemental abundances. Supporting ground based observations will allow studies of the association of the absorbers with galaxy structures along the 17 lines of sight. The overall goal of the program will be to obtain the information that will allow an assessment of the baryonic content of the IGM as revealed by UV and EUV absorption lines seen in the spectra of QSOs. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ Probe the IGM with a combination of G130M and G160M observations. The G130M targets will use the lowest 4 of the 5 central wavelengths to to cover the FUV gap between segment A and B. The G160M will use the highest four central wavelength settings. Real Time Justification ----------------------- Calibration Justification ------------------------- Additional Comments ------------------- Only a portion of the GTO targets in this submission will be used for Cycle 17. The rest will be observed in future cycles. 11541( 9) - 10-Nov-2009 18:16:25 - [ 2] Prepared by Steven Penton, steven.penton@colorado.edu, 303-492-0407. Please include SP, and the COS instrument scientist (Cynthia Froning, Cynthia.Froning@colorado.edu) on all communications regarding this GTO project. Visit 13 is a replacement visit for Visits 1 and 12. This target was used as an ERO. Based upon the spectrum of this target, the GTO team would like to adjust the central wavelengths of this visit to concentrate on the 1291 setting, with the constraint that it should be observed before Nov. 4th. Visit 2 is also preferred before Nov 4, 2009. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11541( 9) - 10-Nov-2009 18:16:25 - [ 3] TARGET LIST Fixed Targets ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Tar| Target | Target | Target |Coord | Radial | Flux data No | Name | Description | Position |Eqnx | Vel. | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1 PKS0405-123 GALAXY, LYMAN ALPHA RA=04H07M48.4296S +/- 0.1", J2000 Z = V = 14.82 +/- 0.2 F(1200)=2.0E-14 CLOUD, QSO DEC=-12D11'36.35" +/- 0.1" 0.57259 Reference Frame: ICRS Comments: 5 orbits G160M, 4 orbits G130M and 1 orbit G230L Flux is from FUSE(B087010100), F(1180)=3.7E-14 (2001), but FUSE(d1030102), F(1180)=2E-14 (2004) GHRS(Z3HL0105T), F(1560)=1.9E-14 (2E-14 at 1720A, 1996) STIS(O58301010), F (2180)=1.7E-14, 1999. Since this is CVZ there will be no WFC3 Parallels. An NUV+MIRRORB TA (2x2+IMAGE) takes 1034s including OSM overheads to set up the first exposure (857s TA + 177s overhead). A spectroscopic G160M TA (2x2+XD+5x1.2DD) takes 891s, but the overhead is only 68s = 959s total. The original goal was 14500s, using a 2x2 we get 15284s. Using 2.5x the FOS flux values (test server, COS63203) gives 33 cps brightest pixel. Using 0.5x the FOS flux valuse (test, COS63204) gives S/N=40 is 33s. Spectroscopic TA could be faster, so we simulate this using our uploaded FOS spectrum: at 2.5 x nominal flux (COS73198) shows a safe target with BT=1199*2/3=800s) at 0.5 x nominal flux (COS73199) gives our ET of 7.5s (BT=3706*2/3=2471s) It turns out we save 75s doing a spectroscopic TA. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 2 3C263 COS/FUV ACQ/PEA PSA G130M 1291 1 8 S KXD Comments: see previous comment ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3 3C263 COS/FUV ACQ/PEA PSA G130M 1291 NUM-POS=5, STEP-SIZE=1.2 1 8 S KD Comments: 5x1.2" PEAK DD, both segments ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11541( 9) - 10-Nov-2009 18:16:25 - [ 41] Exposures ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Exp | Target | Instr | Oper. | Aper |Spectral|Central| Optional |Num| Time | Special Num | Name | Config | Mode | or FOV |Element |Waveln.| Parameters |Exp| | Requirements ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4 3C263 COS/FUV TIME-TA PSA G130M 1291 BUFFER-TIME=932 1 3840 S G Comments: Using the 2.5x FOS spectrum gives us our buffer-time , (COS73198) shows a safe target with BT=1199*2/3=800s). Since this is CVZ there will be no WFC3 Parallels. A 2x2 NUV+IMAGE (PSA+MIRRORB) TA takes 978s. Since we are doing NUV G230L observations, this turns out to be an acceptable TA strategy. Moving to a 3x3 would add 294s. The coordinates look great, so a 2x2 shold be fine. A 2x2 NUV+G230L+acq/image (COS73200) takes 23s, but the overal TA is longer (1041-1117s), so we are sticking with the 2x2 imaging. Our observing goals are: G230L: 2500s, actual is 2604s G160M: 18000s, actual is 18000s There are no BOT concerns for this target, and the coordinates have been tweaked to exactly match the SLOAN/DSS coordinates.
