Massa Space Telescope Science Institute N ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Abstract This program will obtain NUV-MAMA observations of the STIS internal Deuterium lamp to construct an NUV flat applicable to all NUV modes. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ This is copied from the Cycle 11 program 9625 to obtain data for an NUV flat with a median S/N of 100/pixel. It and 9625 differ from 8923 in that the G230M central wavelength has been changed from 2579 to 2176 Angstroms, and the slit has been changed from 52X0.2 to 52X0.5, to counteract dimming of the Deuterium lamp. The global count rate in the last observation from 8923 was 215, 000 count/s. From Table 4 of ISR STIS 98-15, switching the central wavelength from 2579 to 2176 should decrease the global count rate by a factor of 1.95, and then switching the slit from 52X0.2 to 52X0.5 will increase the global countrate by a factor of 2.5, producing a net factor of 1.28 increase in countrate. Thus the global count rate in the first observation of this program will be 275, 000 count/s (ignoring the small decline from one lamp exposure to the next). For these exposures we expect 1210 count/low-res pixel/exposure, achieving a median S/N of 100/pixel in10 exposures. Two exposures will be taken at five different SLIT-STEP positions, chosen such that the slit fiducial bars do not overlap in the different settings. In this manner, the regions shadowed by the slit fiducial bar will recieve 4/5=80% of the total illumination over the course of the program, resulting in only minimal degradation of S/N. NUV flats are believed to be relatively independent of wavelength and mode, so the spectroscopic flat obtained in this program should serve as a general purpose NUV flat. An extra exposure is added before the sequence check the lamp instensity and improve the S/N. Proposal Revision After Visit 01 (by T.B. Ake, 17 March 2010): The count rate during Visit 01 was 203, 000 cps, which is about 70% of the level to achieve the desired S/N in the new flat field. From STIS ISR 98-15, changing the central wavelength from 2176 A to 2338 A will increase the count rate by a factor of 1.34, to 272, 000 cps. Currently this new grating setting/lamp/aperture combination is illegal because limits are based on the old, higher output of the deuterium lamp. For now, the exposures have been modified to the 2338 A central wavelength, but are placed ON HOLD until the limits can be updated. Proporsal Revision (by S.-M. Niemi, 3 August 2010): I have confirmed Tom's calculations. Visit 02 has been set to execute at least 1 week before visit 03 to allow some time to analyze the data. After visit 03 the following visits are executed with a rate of two visits per week. I have also set TARGTYPE to D2 under ENGINEERING / Qesiparms to allow the execution of this program with the selected SLIT / GRATING / CENWAVE / EXPTIME configuration.
