PI: Dr. Peter McCullough Space Telescope Science Institute CoI: Ms. Jessica Kim Quijano Space Telescope Science Institute N ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Abstract This program is an experimental path finder for Cycle 18 calibration. Visible-wavelength flat fields will be obtained by observing the dark side of the Earth during periods of full moon illumination. The observations will consist of full-frame streaked WFC3 UVIS imagery: per 22-min total exposure time in a single "dark-sky" orbit, we anticipate collecting 7000 e/pix in F606W or 4500 e/pix in F814W. To achieve Poisson S/N > 100 per pixel, we requires at least 2 orbits of F606W and 3 orbits of F814W. For UVIS narrowband filters, exposures of 1 sec typically do not saturate on the sunlit Earth, so we will take sunlit Earth flats for three of the more-commonly used narrowband filters in Cycle 17 plus the also-popular long-wavelength quad filters, for which we get four filters at once. Why not use the Sunlit Earth for the wideband visible-light filters? It is too bright in the visible for WFC3 UVIS minimum exposure time of 0.5 sec. Similarly, for NICMOS the sunlit-Earth is too bright which saturates the detector too quickly and/or induces abnormal behaviors such as super-shading (Gilmore 1998, NIC 098-011). In the narrowband visible and broadband near-UV its not too bright (predictions in Cox et al. 1987 "Standard Astronomical Sources for HST: 6. Spatially Flat Fields." and observations in ACS Program 10050). Other possibilities? Cox et al.'s Section II.D addresses many other possible sources for flat fields, rejecting them for a variety of reasons. A remaining possibility would be the totally eclipsed moon. Such eclipses provide approximately 2 hours (1 HST orbit) of opportunity per year, so they are too rare to be generically useful. An advantage of the moon over the Earth is that the moon subtends less than 0.25 square degree, whereas the Earth subtends a steradian or more, so scattered light and light potentially leaking around the shutter presents additional problems for the Earth. Also, we're unsure if HST can point 180 deg from the Sun. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ Summary table: Earth is, Filter, Basic visit, N replicas (one 30-min "internal" orbit per visit) moonlit, F606W, 01, 10 11914( 9) - 25-Mar-2011 16:32:53 - [ 2] moonlit, F814W, 20, 15 sunlit, F469N, 50, 10 sunlit, FQ900+, 60, 5 sunlit, F656N, 70, 5 sunlit, F658N, 80, 5 In this phase 2, we set up a single "basic" visit for each of the cases above. Once those are optimized, we'll replicated then N times. sunlit set = F469N (highest-C17-usage WFC3 UVIS narrowband filter), F656N (H-alpha), F658N (Nitrogen), and the long-wave quads (FQ906N et al). Program 11033 (WFPC2 ISR 2008-01) describes using the moonlit Earth for flat fields. For the Earth's bi-directional reflectance function (BRDF): McCullough (2006; http://xxx.lanl.gov/abs/astro-ph/0610518 ) provides references to BRDFs of various surface features. From 400 nm to 1000 nm, reflected light dominates the surface brightness of the Earth, either sunlit or moonlit. Snow is the most reflective, with clouds a close second (in this program we ignore specular glint from the oceans). Cox et al 1987 (Figures 1 is correct (TBR); Figure 3's scale is 10x too bright) provide the specific intensity as functions of wavelength of bright clouds illuminated by sunlight (peak=5E-10 ergs/s/cm^2/Angstrom/arcsec^2) and moonlight (peak=1E-15 in same units): their spectrum is approximately proportional to a 5800 K black-body spectrum, peaking near 500 nm, and the Moon's light is half a million times fainter than the Sun's. Empirical results: ISR WFPC2 2008-01 shows that in a 300-sec exposure and a 0.10 arcsec x 0.10 arcsec pixel, the mean counts are 5373 e/pix in F606W and 3338 e/pix in F814W from full moon lit Earth. The variation is a factor of 2.5 above and below the mean from one exposure to another - a cursory inspection of Table 1 of that ISR suggests the dominant variation is within an orbit. Fig 3.2 of the WFC3 Instrument Handbook shows WFC3's throughput is 2x greater than WFCP2's at these wavelengths, and WFC3's UVIS pixels are 0.04 arcsec x 0.04 arcsec, so 0.16 times the area of WFCP2's. Hence with WFC3 UVIS in a 300-sec exposure of moonlit Earth, we expect 1719 e/pix and 1068 e/pix in F606W and F814W respectively. Because these values are such that read noise will be negligible, and because ~25% of 300-sec exposures of WFPC2 had streaks from bright sources of Earth, we should integrate long enough that we can dump the buffer within the next exposure, but do not integrate much longer than that. With the nominal internal orbit allocated 30 min, of which the last 6 minutes will be spent on buffer dump, we choose to take three 7-min exposures. (In approximate terms, we expect to sum the counts from three exposures with outlier identification and rejection.) Real Time Justification ----------------------- Calibration Justification ------------------------- The accuracy of the flat fields obtained by this program should be comparable to or better than (in any respect) to those obtained by the gold standard methods (e.g. pixel-to-pixel flats from internal lamps or ground tests with 11914( 9) - 25-Mar-2011 16:32:53 - [ 3] low-spatial frequency corrections from photometry of a cluster stars). The accuracy goal is ~1% r.m.s. per pixel over the entire field of view. These observations will provide a comparison with flats derived via other techniques: L-flats from stellar observations, sky flats from stacked GO observations, TV3 flats, and internal flats using the calibration lamps. Additional Comments ------------------- The moonlit earth component of this program requires hand scheduling (as did its predecessor Program 11033). In Program 11033, Merle Reinhart or George Chapman provided RA and Dec coordinates for each scheduling opportunity. As this is a path finder program, a lower-human-impact "path" should also be a goal of the program, so it is our intention that this phase 2 will schedule nearly "automatically" and the role of Merle or George will primarily be to choose one of two recommended (RA, DEC) positions tabulated separately for each full moon during Cycle 17. If too few scheduling opportunities "automatically" schedule, then we should work to make more opportunities exist. Possibly this will require breaking the exposures into more numerous shorter visits, or widening the orbital phase from its proposed domain [0.432 to 0.567]. Expanding the allowed phase range could severely compromise the photon rate, so should not be done if at all possible. Special Requirement: The moon is much brighter when near full (Figure 2(b) of Cox et al.), so we limit the observing window to within +- 2 days from the full moon. We do this by defining (at the visit level) an ephemeris with a JD zero point (2455034.7) equal to a NEW moon and use the synoptic period of the moon (29.53 days), and then request a phase requirement of 0.45 to 0.55 to get nearly FULL moon on the first exposure of each moonlit visit. For the narrowband-filter images of the sunlit Earth, 1 second exposures produce 80, 000 electrons as the mean expectation value (for four filters studied with 500 nm < lambda < 900) based upon scaling (only for pixel area, not throughput, which is similar) from HRC in ACS ISR 2005-12. Considerable scatter about this mean is expected from prior experience due to the variations in scene brightness and geometry of HST. The yield of "good" exposures to those that must be discarded due to poor illumination is only 10% (10% good, 90% bad) from Table 2 of ACS ISR 2005-12. The value of 10% for the yield is very approximate, but if we adopt it, then each set of five 3-exposure visits has an 80% probability of producing at least one "good" narrowband sunlit-Earth flat, based upon "independent" binomial trials. Analysis: The method of using an extended source to measure a flat field is described by Chae (2004) and references therein. The usual procedure is to dither observations of an anisotropic but temporally-constant field of view (e.g. the Moon, a galaxy). For this program we may assume the field of view is illuminated by a 1-D pattern caused by the streaking motion of the Earth below. The 1-D pattern will change from one exposure to another. From one visit to another, the orientation of the streaks will change. We should be able to determine the flat field from multiple-exposures made at different orientations to the detector. Each exposure of N^2 pixel measurements depends on the N^2 pixel flat field that we wish to determine and a N-pixel 1-D vector of unknown and arbitrary illumination. 11914( 9) - 25-Mar-2011 16:32:53 - [ 4] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11914( 9) - 25-Mar-2011 16:32:53 - [ 5] TARGET LIST Fixed Targets ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Tar| Target | Target | Target |Coord | Radial | Flux data No | Name | Description | Position |Eqnx | Vel. | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1 MOONLIT-EART CALIBRATION, RA=12H08M19.2000S +/- 0.1", J2000 V = 0 H-200908-TAR PHOTOMETRIC DEC=+69D48'0.00" +/- 0.1" GET1 Reference Frame: ICRS ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11914( 9) - 25-Mar-2011 16:32:53 - [ 6] Visit: 01 Visit Requirements: GUID TOL 1000" On Hold Comments: Additional Comments: moonlit earth, F606W Exposures ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Exp | Target | Instr | Oper. | Aper |Spectral|Central| Optional |Num| Time | Special Num | Name | Config | Mode | or FOV |Element |Waveln.| Parameters |Exp| | Requirements ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1 EARTH-CALIB WFC3/UVI ACCUM UVIS F606W CR-SPLIT=NO 1 250 S SEQ 1-3 NON-INT S Comments: full moon illuminated dark earth flat For the moonlit-earth visits, the pattern of 250-350-350-sec exposures is designed in order to acquire three moderate-length exposures AND their buffer dumps within 30 minutes.
