(The WFC3 UVIS version of this is program 11914 and contains additional detail in its description). Infrared-wavelength flat fields will be obtained by observing the dark side of the Earth during periods of full moon illumination. The observations will consist of full-frame streaked WFC3 IR imagery: per single "dark-sky" orbit, we anticipate achieving Poisson S/N > 100 per pixel in each of three to five exposures, depending on sample sequence (SPARS25 or SPARS50). Why not use the Sunlit Earth? It is too bright for WFC3 IR full-frame minimum exposure time of 3 sec. Similarly, for NICMOS the sunlit-Earth is too bright which saturates the detector too quickly and/or induces abnormal behaviors such as super-shading (Gilmore 1998, NIC 098-011). In the narrowband IR filters the sunlit earth sometimes is faint enough to not saturate immediately, but based upon predictions (Cox et al. 1987 "Standard Astronomical Sources for HST: 6. Spatially Flat Fields.") and observations (Gilmore 1998), we consider sunlit Earth unlikely to be successful unless it is twilight. Other possibilities? Cox et al.'s Section II.D addresses many other possible sources for flat fields, rejecting them for a variety of reasons. A remaining possibility would be the totally eclipsed moon. Such eclipses provide approximately 2 hours (1 HST orbit) of opportunity per year, so they are too rare to be generically useful. An advantage of the moon over the Earth is that the moon subtends less than 0.25 square degree, whereas the Earth subtends a steradian or more, so scattered light and light prior to the unshuttered exposure presents additional problems for the Earth. Once those are optimized, we'll replicated them N times. sunlit set = none Program 11033 (WFPC2 ISR 2008-01) describes using the moonlit Earth for flat fields. For the Earth's bi-directional reflectance function (BRDF): McCullough (2006; http://xxx.lanl.gov/abs/astro-ph/0610518 ) provides references to BRDFs of various surface features. From 400 nm to 1000 nm, reflected light dominates the surface brightness of the Earth, either sunlit or moonlit. We presume that is also true from 1000 nm to 1700 nm. For example, the blackbody radiance of a 300 K Earth would be negligible compare to reflected light even at 1700 nm. Snow is the most reflective, with clouds a close second (in this program we ignore specular glint from the oceans). Cox et al 1987 (Figures 1 is correct; Figure 3's scale is 10x too bright) provide the specific intensity as functions of wavelength of bright clouds illuminated by sunlight (peak=5E-10 ergs/s/cm^2/Angstrom/arcsec^2) and moonlight (peak=1E-15 in same units): their spectrum is approximately proportional to a 5800 K black-body spectrum, peaking near 500 nm, and the Moon's light is half a million times fainter than the Sun's. Empirical results: ISR WFPC2 2008-01 and Program 11914 justify WFC3 UVIS producing mean counts of 6 e/s/pix and 4 e/s/pix in F606W and F814W respectively of full moonlit Earth. With WFC3 IR pixels 10x larger in area than UVIS pixels, and throughput 2x to 4x larger for WFC3 IR than UVIS, and the moonlit Earth being approximately like a solar (5800 K blackbody) spectral shape, we can expect 20x greater e/s/pix in WFC3 IR than WFC3 UVIS for a similarly wideband filter, so approximately 120 e/s/pix, or 80 sec required to produce Poisson-limited SNR = 100 per pixel. ETC predictions: The WFC3 ETC prediction is that for full moonlit clouds on Earth (0.7E-15 ergs/s/cm^2/Angstrom/arcsec^2 at 1000 nm), the time to achieve in F110W SNR = 100 is 22 seconds, and the time to saturation is 150 seconds. The corresponding values for F160W are 56 sec and 383 sec. That the results scaled from observations predicts 80 seconds and the ETC predicts 22 seconds can be rationalized that the observational mean includes darker areas of Earth than bright clouds and/or less-than-full moonlight. That they agree within a factor of 4 is satisfactory. Consequently we use SPARS25, NSAMP=9, in visits 1-5 for exposure time of 203 sec; We can fit five of those and their buffer dumps into 30 minutes. In principle the flat fields should not depend on sample sequence; we test this with visits that use SPARS50, NSAMP=8 in visits 6-10 with three exposures per visit.
