The effect has been characterized by observations of star clusters observed with and without additional background from the internal lamps. As WFC3 lacks internal lamps which can be used to add background, we will rely on the bright Earth limb to provide additional background. We will observe a star cluster, 47 Tuc, repeatedly throughout a complete HST orbit which has been chosen to put the closest approach to the bright Earth to be 13.5 degrees, the closest approach allowed while retaining FGS guiding. Another set will be done with the BE limb closest approach of 15.5 degrees. The observations will be done with the two most commonly used filters, F110W and F160W and at two different bright Earth limb angles to test the linearity of the non-linearity. We have also included an orbit on NGC 1850 to repeat the NICMOS field for which the linearity of the field has been established. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ To monitor a cluster, 47 Tuc, throughout day and night side of Earth-skimming orbits to add bright Earth background lightand test for count rate non-linearity. Observe a star cluster with and without Bright Earth(BE): cr_BE-cr_dark = (f_obj+f_sky1+f_BE)^alpha -(f_obj+f_sky2)^alpha or = (f_obj+f_BE)^alpha -(f_obj)^alpha for f_sky << f_obj Then solve for alpha Considerations: Star cluster--good range of pixel counts Rich enough for good statistics Sparse enough for good sky measurement (sky1­sky2) Near orbital pole to allow Earth skimming (47 Tuc) Background--provides the flux to change count-rate of source pixels 11933( 31) - 30-Jan-2012 19:00:52 - [ 2] High enough to provide significant change in count-rate (many times sky) Low enough to retain faint (science-like) sources Hard to get as high as we like before losing FGS guiding (13.5 deg, 11e/s) best measurement near BE level, stars ~18th mag.
