N ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Abstract This program is a continuation of 11523, in which we took advantage of COS' high sensitivity to study both the stellar and gaseous component of the very-low-metallicity galaxy, I Zwicky 18 (IZw18). Here, we repeat observations of I Zw 18 with G130M and G160M to increase the S/N of weak (or apparently absent) stellar and nebular features in order to improve our abundance estimates. For example, we wish to confirm the VERY low stellar abundance of nitrogen through spectral observations of the N V 1240 resonance doublet and the N IV 1718 line. We will also take advantage of WFC3's high-QE IR sensitivity to search for high-redshift galaxies via the Lyman-Break method. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ We will first acquire the extended target using a scan-size=3 and then refine the acquisition using a scan-size=2, a procedure which worked nicely in 11523. Also as in 11523, we will obtain spectra of I Zw 18 with G130M and G160M. We use the wavelength setting=1291A for all G130M spectra in order to search for stellar Si III (4) 1298 (if present) and for nebular O I and Si II (if not wiped out by geocoronal emission). We will attempt to reduce the fixed pattern noise incurred by the G130M/1291A (FP=3 & 4) settings by making small POS-TARG's in the XD direction. We will use FP-POS's to reduce FP-noise in the G160M spectra. We will not repeat observations with G185M, as the observations of 11523 were sufficient in showing stellar/nebular, C III] 1909A. As a result, Visit #2 is introduced which superceeds Visit #1. In Visit #2, the G130M/1291A observations have been changed to G130M/1309 FP=1, 2, 3 & 4. This maximizes the number of FP-POSs to reduce fixed pattern noise. The Y POS TARG dithers have been removed.
