PI: Dr. James C. Green University of Colorado at Boulder CoI: Dr. Barry Welsh University of California - Berkeley Y CoI: Dr. Steven V. Penton University of Colorado at Boulder N CoI: Dr. Cynthia Froning University of Colorado at Boulder N ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Abstract We shall use hot white dwarf stars located within 150pc of the Sun to probe the absorption properties of the interstellar gas associated with the local cavity. There is still much debate concerning the ionization state of the local gas, since previously detected highly ionized lines (such as CIV and SiIV) could be associated with the circumstellar environments of hot white dwarfs. By using a priori knowledge of the velocity structure of the interstellar sight-lines to these targets (gained from high spectral resolution ground-based observations) in conjunction with the UV absorption data gained with HST-COS, we shall be able to better determine both the physical and chemical state of the numerous diffuse interstellar clouds present within the local cavity. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ COS FUV G130M and G160M observations of bright white dwarfs. We understand that by observing in Time-Tag we could lose some data due to buffer issues. This is acceptable. Target Acquisitions are FUV spectroscopic. Some target fluxes are at or above the screening limits, but well below the hardware limits. Five orbits have been allocated to this project, but only four are actually used (this spare orbit is used in another GTO project, 12032) Visit 4 is placed on hold, as it assumed it would not pass the BOT review, although it is the preferred target over it's replacement, Visit 8. Should Visit 4 (WD0721) be deemed observable, it should be observed instead of Visit 8 (WD2321) Real Time Justification ----------------------- Calibration Justification ------------------------- Additional Comments ------------------- 12031( 4) - 14-Apr-2011 09:53:01 - [ 2] Prepared by Steven Penton, steven.penton@colorado.edu, 303-492-0407 Please use the above contact for any technical questions about this proposal. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 12031( 4) - 14-Apr-2011 09:53:01 - [ 3] TARGET LIST Fixed Targets ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Tar| Target | Target | Target |Coord | Radial | Flux data No | Name | Description | Position |Eqnx | Vel. | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4 WD0721-276 STAR, DA RA=07H23M19.9750S +/- 0.1", J2000 V = 14.52 +/- 0.1 F(1200)=8.8E-13 DEC=-27D47'22.20" +/- 0.1" Reference Frame: ICRS Comments: DA White Dwarf (EUVE target).
