Kalirai Space Telescope Science Institute N ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Abstract Fringing has been observed in flat fields of 12 narrowband filters (4 full-frame and 3 quad spectral elements) longer than 600 nm, with peak-to-peak fringe amplitude variations ranging from 0.5% to 14.2% (WFC3 ISR 2010-04). Two filters (F953N and F656N) will be tested in program 11922, supporting 88 Cycle 17 GO exposures in these filters. Here we propose to observe globular cluster Omega Centauri (NGC 5139) in the other 10 filters affected by fringing, supporting 319 Cycle 17 GO exposures in these filters. By measuring the relative changes in brightness of stars at different positions on the detector, we will determine the local variations induced by the fringing pattern. The data will serve two purposes: characterize the effect of fringing on photometry of on-orbit data, and verify models used to correct for fringing effects. The models rely on Thermal Vacuum Test 3 (TV3) data between 845-990 nm and NASA/GSFC Detector Characterization Laboratory (DCL) test data from 700-1060 nm. Only the F953N filter in program 11922 overlaps with the test data wavelength range, making it difficult to compare the efficacy of fringe models. This program will expand the on-orbit fringing data so that we can compare models at 6 new wavelengths within the ground test data wavelength range, as well as 4 new wavelengths not covered by the ground test data. Flight data in these 4 filters can be corrected by extrapolating the model beyond the wavelength range of the test data used to create the model. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ We will observe star cluster Omega Cen because of its flat and extended core (~2.5 arcmin). Therefore stellar density gradients will not be a problem in this kind of analysis. We will acquire 6 pointings in each filter: a five-point small dither pattern (2 by 2 plus a central pointing) in a 16" square, plus an outrigger pointing 32" away from the center of the small dither pattern. The small steps are chosen to be larger than the fringe pattern features, but small enough to ensure that most stars will be observed at all 5 pointings for accurate statistics. The outrigger pointing will test larger-scale variation due to features--such as the broad thin area in quad D (nicknamed the "happy bunny")--which are too large to be spanned by the small dither box. Fringing effects are variable over the detector surface, and different metrics may be used to characterize fringing. See WFC3 ISR 2010-04 for more information. Real Time Justification ----------------------- None. Calibration Justification ------------------------- This is a calibration proposal. The results will be used to characterize the severity of fringing effects on photometry of on-orbit data. Fringe models are being developed to correct for fringing in WFC3/UVIS data (WFC3 TIR 2010-01). The on-orbit data acquired in this program will be used to select the best model for fringe corrections. Models based on TV3 data alone, or based on both TV3 and DCL data, must be compared to determine whether they can extrapolate to shorter wavelengths than the test data, which went no shorter than 845 nm in TV3 (or 700 nm in the DCL tests). Fringing can be corrected to some extent by standard pipeline flat fields, but the correction is accurate only if the spectral energy distribution (SED) of the science data is identical to the SED of the calibration lamp. Since this is usually not the case, the fringing model is the best option to correct on-orbit science data. The observations proposed here are necessary to determine the best model to use for fringing correction.
