Ayres University of Colorado at Boulder ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Abstract This is a calibration proposal that addresses a significant obstacle to ongoing efforts to enhance the quality of the dispersion solutions implemented in the STIS echelle pipeline. Namely, the wavecal material representing many of the secondary grating "tilts" is in relatively poor shape. With solid lamp calibrations in all 37 supported high-res (E140H and E230H) settings, STIS itself can be exploited to bootstrap (by means of an empirical wavelength distortion correction) a "laboratory calibration" to the many lines emitted by the STIS lamps, mainly chromium, that were missing from the GHRS flight-spare units originally measured at NIST in the 1990's, and more recent work with STIS-type lamps that unfortunately only covers the FUV band. The prototype distortion correction significantly improves the quality of the pipeline spectra, to the great benefit of the many types of GO programs that require accurate velocity measurements -- stellar, interstellar, and even intergalactic -- and thus have turned to STIS in the past. (And now again, during its "second life.") The proposed exposure depth enhancements for the 28 (of 44) tilts require seven orbits, with no impact on science time. The total exposure duration (10 hours) is only 1/4 that already expended on "deep" wavecals (texp>60 s), and essentially would complete the fundamental wavelength calibration of this enormously valuable spectroscopic machine. The program should have negligible impact on lamp life, which is measured in many hundreds of hours. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ Overview ----------- The objective of the proposal is to build up cumulative exposure depth in STIS wavelength calibrations for the numerous echelle settings -- all, but one, are secondaries -- that currently lack sufficient S/N to allow the highest quality dispersion modeling. The targeted settings were identified in a previous Cycle 17 calibration archival study, "Ironing out the Wrinkles, " which carefully assessed the existing collection of STIS echellegrams of the wavelength calibration sources (onboard Pt/Cr-Ne discharge lamps). The new exposures can be taken "internally, " i.e., when another of the science instruments is active, with no impact on normal GO observing time. Seven orbits were allocated for the purpose. Strategy 12280( 5) - 10-Nov-2010 14:01:40 - [ 2] ----------- The observing strategy is straightforward: obtain sequences of lamp exposures (target="WAVE") for the identified settings, with exposure times determined from the previous Wrinkles analysis. Two visits were developed: one of 3 orbits for FUV settings (all E140H) and one of 4 orbits for NUV settings (mixed H and M). Any exposure longer than 1800 s was broken into a pair of (equal) shorter ones to minimize effects of thermal drifts. Individual exposure times (of a pair, if appropriate) range from 600 s to the maximum of 1800 s. In all cases, the default spectroscopic aperture for the mode was utilized: 020x009 for H and 020x006 for M. There are 22 exposures total, of which 5 are pairs. The exposures completely fill the available orbital time ("pseudo-CVZ"). There is not much else to be said except that this highly nonstandard program generated more than its fair share of APT errors!
