These charge-injected observations will be obtained during the 2nd epoch of the CTE monitor program, in the March 2011 window. ----------- Original Text prior to 14 Feb 2011 below this line --------------------- This program extends the Cycle 17 external CTE calibration (CAL/WFC3 ID 11924) program for WFC3/UVIS over Cycle 18. Targets are (i) the sparse cluster NGC 6791 observed in Cycle 17, to continue a consistent set of observations that allows to isolate the time evolution of the CTE, and (ii) a denser field in 47 Tuc (NGC 104). The latter will provide data to measure the dependence of the CTE on field crowding. It will also provide a consistent comparison between the CTE evolution of WFC3/UVIS and that of ACS/WFC at the same time into the flight (1 year), because ACS/WFC CTE data were based on 47 Tuc observations. Additional observations of 47 Tuc in the CVZ will provide a wide range 12379( 8) - 30-Mar-2011 18:42:19 - [ 2] of background levels to measure the background dependence of the UVIS CTE. Goals are (i) the continued monitoring of the time evolution of the WFC3/UVIS CTE, (ii) establishing the detector X, Y dependence of the CTE, (iii) CTE dependence of the background level and (iv) an improved CTE correction model based on these measurements. October 2011). 2) Simplifying the CTE monitor observations for NGC 6791 in the second epoch (March 2011): we omit the observations that are dithered in POS-TARG X direction. We also frop the Y-dithered set of short observations for F606W and F502N, keeping only the long Y - dithered exposures; this allows one set of long-long exposure comparisons, and one set of long-short ones. This frees up 1 orbit. 3) Using the freed up orbits from 1) and 2), together with two additional external orbits that we were granted, we will thoroughly assess the data quality of charge - injected data under a realistic observing setups. To this end, we observe 47 Tuc (NGC 104) in two different filters (F606W, F502N) to generate low and high background levels, and in two different charge injection modes, LINE10 and LINE17. Both line modes had shown promising but 12379( 8) - 30-Mar-2011 18:42:19 - [ 3] similar results in CAL/WFC3 12348 data, and we need the current data to decide which mode will be offered to observers. Each of the 4 combinations of charge injection mode and filter will be observed in 5 exposures, dithered in POST-TARG Y by few pixels, to simulate a properly dithered data set that science observers would obtain when charge injection is activated; these data will measure the final quality of charge-injected data after all calibration steps. These sets of 5 exposures will be repeated with an additional dither throw of 1/2 field of view (2000 pxl) in POST-TARG Y. That step places the same source onto two different distances from the amplifier rows, and allows CTE measurements from the combination of the exposures, as well as the assessment of CTE mitigation by charge injection. Altogether, we obtain 4 filter - charge injection mode combinations, each of which is observed with and without a large Y dither offset, each of which has 5 small-step dithered exposures, for a total of 40 exposures. These charge-injected observations will be obtained during the 2nd epoch of the CTE monitor program, in the March 2011 window. The originally planned CTE monitor observations of 47 Tuc / NGC 104 will be kept (see the original text below for description). ----------- Original Text prior to 14 Feb 2011 below this line --------------------- We observe two clusters, an open cluster, NGC 6791 and a crowded cluster, 47 Tuc (NGC 104) in order to investigate the effects of crowding, differing background levels, detector position and count rates on the WFC3/UVIS channel detectors' Charge Transfer Efficiency (CTE). Pairs of visits, one for each cluster, are observed 3 times during cycle 18, spaced approximately 3-4 months apart. Exposure times are set to maximize the signal to noise over a brightness range of X-Y magnitudes. An additional CVZ observation of 47 Tuc (Visit 07) will provide a wide range of background levels to test the background dependence of the CTE. These data will be used to measure the CTE, and compare these values to the CTE measurements obtained during Cycle 17, SMOV and ground testing. We will also compare the rate of change in the WFC3 CCDs' CTE with those of the ACS CCDs. We expect to measure the CTE to a precision of 1% in point source photometry and 5% in point source centroid shift (astrometry). For NGC 6791 (Visits 01, 03, 05), observations will be identical to those in Cycle 17 / CAL/WFC3 Proposal 11924, with equal exposure times, coordinates, filters and dither patterns (3 pointings, one dithered approx. 2000 pixel in detector X, one approx. 2000 pixel in detector Y). The long and short exposures, and the measurements of the same stars on both detectors, provide data to establish a CTE model as a function of various parameters. For 47 Tuc (Visits 02, 04, 06), we will only use a detector Y direction dither to measure the main CTE component's dependence on field crowding, as well as 12379( 8) - 30-Mar-2011 18:42:19 - [ 4] its comparison between ACS/WFC3 and WFC3/UVIS. Coordinates will follow the calibration program 12348 (PI: Baggett, Charge Injection and CTE) , long and short exposure times are as in programs 11444 and 12348. Both NGC 6791 and 47 Tuc are observed in the F606W and F502N filters to increase the range of background levels useful to establish a UVIS CTE model. At the end of the 2nd orbit of the NGC6791 observations (Visits 01, 03, 05), we have added two short exposures (#13 & #14). The first one (#13) replicates the last regular NGC6791 exposure (#12) to monitor exposure back-to-back photometric stability. The second one (#14) replicates exposure #5, so that #13 and #14 together increase the S/N of faint stars in the Y-dithered F606W short exposures (#5 and #12): faint star CTE effects in detector Y direction are the main interest of this program. Scheduling: ---------------- 1) The CTE long-term monitoring observations (Visits 01 to 06) will be taken at 3 epochs in Cycle 18, the first epoch as soon as possible in Oct/Nov 2010, the following two epochs spaced evenly throughout the cycle. We ask that pairs of NGC 6791 and 47 Tuc observations (Visits 01&02, Visits 03&04, Visits 05&06) are taken within 7 days from each other, to sample the CTE at similar epochs. We have set visit-level timing requirements for visit groups accordingly. 2) The additional CVZ observation of 47 Tuc (Visit 07) should be taken as soon as possible; these data are needed to assess the year-1 post-installation state of UVIS. Because we explicitly require strong background variations, we request to reduce the bright earth avoidance angle by a small amount to allow CVZ scheduling no later than November 2010. The required earth avoidance adjustment should be very small: With the generic NED/SINDBAD coordinates of 47 Tuc, CVZ scheduling in November 2010 was feasible. Moving the pointing just 6 arcmin west, to conform with previous data, precluded CVZ scheduling for the remainder of 2010. These Visit 07 Observations should best be scheduled at the very beginning (if unavailable, the very end) of the first schedulability window to provide maximum background variation from the Earth's limb. The additional data and changes are necessary to: - Measure the quality (additional noise, artifacts, other unknown problems) of reduced charge-injected data that were taken under realistic observing conditions (properly dithered, different background levels). This information is crucial for Cycle 19 observers to decide whether they will use charge injection, and what the adjustments in exposure time and observing technique will be. - Measure the performance of the so far promising charge injection modes LINE10 and LINE17, and decide which of the two will be calibrated and offered to observers in Cycle 19 . ----------- Original Text prior to 14 Feb 2011 below this line --------------------- These data will be used to determine the rate of change of the CTE with time, and with position on the detector. Results will be compared to CY 17 CTE measurements for WFC3/UVIS CCDs, as well as to ACS/CCDs, and where possible to CTE measurements of first and second generation HST instruments. The analysis of the data will be used to obtain a model of CTE-induced losses in both FLT and DRZ UVIS images, with a precision of better than 1% for stellar photometry and less than 5% for astrometric effects from CTE-induced source centroid shifts.
