Gordon Space Telescope Science Institute N ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Abstract a) Verify the ACS HRC and WFC photometric calibrations with a repeat visit to one of the three primary WDs. b) Measure the change in sensitivity with time for bright stars, (which would include any small CTE contributions.) c) Continue to investigate the ~2% discrepancy between ACS flux calibration and that of STIS (ACS ISR 2007-06). The goal is to measure any filter bandpass shifts in ACS or rule out the possibility of shifts as the primary contributors to the ACS/STIS discrepancy for cool stars. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ With our goal of 1% accuracy in the ACS flux calibration, uncertainty in the observed counts/s of the standard stars should be <<1% to remain a small part of the error budget. Typically, the ACS photometry pushes the bright limits and has a 0.2-0.3% statistical photon error. However, a repeated annual program is required to maintain accuracies in the corrections at similar sub-percent levels for the combined effects of CTE and photon sensitivity that both change over time. This program is a follow-on to the 9 orbit ACS calibration program 11889 in Cycle 17. This program represents the minimal investment in resources required to characterize the most important WFC filters. The main inconsistency found in ACS ISR 2007-06 was between the WD and cooler G, F stars P330E and BD+17d 4708. The red stars VB8 (M7), 2M0038+18 (L3.5) and 2M0559-14 (T5) were important contributors to the study in ACS ISR 2007-06. However, variability at the shorter wavelengths limited the utility of such cool stars to the three longest wavelength filters, F775W, F814W, and F850LP. All three red stars are omitted for cycle 18. While WFC3 has chosen to broaden its photometric calibration program with a larger set of standard stars, ACS proposes a smaller more efficient set, which are measured 12392( 3) - 05-Nov-2010 17:53:40 - [ 2] repeatedly to provide confidence in the results at the sub-percent level required to study the 2% discrepancy. Not all of the ACS set are observed every year. Last cycle, only one of the primary WDs was observed with ACS; this cycle, the other two GD71 and G191B2B will be observed. Last cycle, 4 secondary stars were observed; and to trim the cycle 18 orbits to a minimum, the only requirements are for the crucial IR standard P330E and the new KF06T2 (K1.5III), which has not yet been observed a second time with ACS. KF06T2 must be observed with STIS a second time to verify repeatability and establish its status as an HST flux standard. One STIS orbit is required for P330E to monitor the curious apparent flux increase of ~2% in Cycle 17 near the long wavelength limit of one micron. Finally, a third STIS orbit is required to observe a primary WD standard to provide a solid tie to the fundamental flux scale and to verify that the STIS flux corrections are proper for the G and K star data. Because this program is essentially a cross-calibration between ACS and STIS, a fair fraction of the required orbits are STIS low dispersion.
