Proffitt Computer Sciences Corporation Y ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Abstract This program will obtain FUV-MAMA observations of the STIS internal Krypton lamp to construct an FUV flat applicable to all FUV modes. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ This a copy of the Cycle 11 proposal 9624 to obtain data for an FUV flat with a median S/N of 100/pixel. As in 9624, and differing from the previous proposal 8922, the G140M central wavelength has been changed from 1387 to 1470 Angstroms, and the slit has been changed from 52X0.05 to 52X0.1, to counteract dimming of the Krypton lamp. The global count rate in the last observation from 8922 was 213, 000 counts/second. From Table 3 of ISR STIS 98-15, switching the central wavelength from 1387 to 1470 Angstroms should reduce the global count rate by a factor of 1.5, and then switching the slit from 52X0.05 to 52X0.1 will increase the global countrate by a factor of 2, producing a net factor of 1.33 increase in countrate. Thus the global countrate in the first observation of this program will be approximately 284, 000 count/s (ignoring the small decline from one lamp exposure to the next). For these exposures we expect 1280 count/low-res pixel/exposure, achieving a median S/N of 100/pixel in 10 exposures. Two exposures will be taken at five different SLIT-STEP positions, chosen such that the slit fiducial bars do not overlap in the different settings. In this manner, the regions shadowed by the slit fiducial bar will recieve 4/5=80% of the total illumination over the course of the program, resulting in only minimal degradation of S/N. FUV flats are believed to be relatively independent of wavelength and mode, so the spectroscopic flat obtained in this program should serve as a general purpose FUV flat. The whole sequence is preceeded by a single visit to which can be used to check the intensity of the calibration lamp (and can be added to the 10-visit sequence).
