Sahnow Space Telescope Science Institute N CoI: Dr. Kevin France University of Colorado at Boulder N ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Abstract We fully calibrate a new COS/G130M wavelength setting in this program. This setting, G130M/1222, places Geocoronal Lya on the detector gap (to mitigate FUV detector gain sag) and covers the astrophysically important UV bandpass of 1065-1327 Angstrom. At the focus mechanism position requested (-850), this mode provides 4-10 times the resolution of the G130M/1055 and G130M/1096 central wavelength settings at the same sensitivity. The sensitivity, waveband, and increased resolution of the G130M/1222 central wavelength (R=17, 000 at 1065 Angstrom, 15, 000 at 1222 Angstrom, and 12, 000 at 1369 Angstrom) is beneficial to many UV scientific studies, including, but not limited to, molecular hydrogen in planetary nebulae and translucent clouds, the HeII lyman-alpha forest in the epoch of HeII re-ionization, AGN intrinsic absorbers and high-ionization outflows, low-redshift IGM, galaxy halos, galaxy feedback, and the WHIM using O VI, MgX, NeVIII, Lyman beta, and other important atomic and molecular transitions. At 1100 Angstrom, this mode has ~10 times the effective area of FUSE (per channel) with almost non-existent detector background. This program is designed to completely calibrate this wavelength setting with minimal use of STScI personnel and resources. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ Fours visits separated by ~1 month each. Timing is critical Visit#1 (8/11--8/29/11) In this one-orbit visit, we look at all four FP-POS positions with the WD0320-539 target to obtain initial sensitivity and wavelength solutions. Since the CALCOS pipeline will not be able to process these observations, all analysis will be performed using the rawtag file and custom software developed in IDL. This custom software is, in essence, a mini pipeline which must perform many of the tasks present in CALCOS, including, but not limited to, drift correction, background subtraction, spectral extraction, data quality filtering, and flatfielding. This visit must be analyzed as soon as the data is taken to ensure that the mechanism positions commanded are the best possible to cover the desired wavelengths and keep Geocoronal Lya on the detector gap. While we have examined the mechanism positions carefully, we have never observed this grating at this focus position, so it is possible that we could 12505( 7) - 07-Aug-2012 19:26:56 - [ 2] be off by a step or two. We need to allow for this contingency. Updated wavelength solutions and sensitivity files will be provided to STScI for use in the ETC no more than one month after these observations, if necessary. Visit#2 (10/11--10/24/11) In this two-orbit visit, we obtain more data on WD0320-539 to reach the signal-to-noise required to create sensitivity files good to 5%. At this point, we will also have enough lamp exposure data to create the lamp template used in wavelength determinations in CALCOS. Updated wavelength solutions and sensitivity files will be provided to STScI for use in the ETC no more than one month after these observations. The combined Visit#1+2 white dwarf spectrum will be modelled to produce a gridwire flatfield to be delivered to STScI. Visit#3 (11/13--12/2/11) In this three-orbit visit, we observe the central star of the planetary nebula (PN) NGC~3132. We will use the sensitivity curves and gridwire flatfield produced in Visits#1+#2 to initially calibrate this spectrum. The spectrum will then be modelled to determine an improved wavelength solution. This wavelength solution will be used to re-reduce the Visits#1+#2 spectra and obtain updated sensitivity and flatfield files. The PN spectrum will then be re-reduced with the new sensitivity, wavelength, and flatfield files. The process will be iterated until convergence, and all reference files will be delivered to STScI in a format ready to used in the CALCOS pipeline. Also, the drift correction will be tested using the lamp template created from Visits 1+2 to determine the correct LAMPFLASH exposure time. Visit#4 (11/6--12/11/11) In this three-orbit visit, an ERO observation of HE0238-1904 will be performed using the LAMPFLASH exposure times as previously determined. All the appropriate reference files should be in place by this time, and the data will be run through a beta version of CALCOS designed to handle this central wavelength. An analysis of the ionization state of gas in the intrinsic absorber of the AGN will be fast-tracked and presented at the AAS January 2012. Real Time Justification ----------------------- Special commanding will be employed in all visits. For Visits #1 and #2 the S/C is in the following pattern : 1) Redefine the TEST wavelength setting to the G130M/1222 OSM rotation positions and focus =-170 (the G130M/1291 position) 2) Take a short spectrum at the G130M/1222 OSM rotation positions, but at the G130M/1291 focus 3) Move the focus to -850 (this move is -680 from the -170 G130M/1291 position) 4) Take the desired spectra 5) Re-set the focus offset to 0 (this moves the focus back to the -170 absolute position). 6) RESTORE the TEST central wavelength setting. For Visits #3 and #4 the S/C is in the following pattern : 1) Redefine the TEST wavelength setting to the G130M/1222 OSM rotation positions and focus =-850 (the G130M/1222 position) 12505( 7) - 07-Aug-2012 19:26:56 - [ 3] 2) Take the desired spectra 3) RESTORE the TEST central wavelength setting. Calibration Justification ------------------------- Since the G130M/1222 central wavelength is not currently supported by OPUS and CALCOS, there could be some conflicts. All observations in this program are taken under a TEST+G130M/1291 wavelength setting umbrella, the only problems are in the calibrated spectra (which are not used) and in the keyword headers (e.g., CENWAVE will say 1291 or TEST, but it's actually 1222). Calibration should be bypassed for many exposures (see exposure level comments). Fastracking is requested for Visits #1 and #2. Fastrack data for this program should be placed on central storage in the directory /smov/cos/Data/12505_fasttrack/ Additional Comments ------------------- The visits are on hold as follows : Visit #2 should execute 37-60 days after Visit #1 (We need to check that the OSM positions were correct) Visit #3 should execute 30-100 days after VIsit #2 (We need to check that the focus position and TAGFLASHs are proper) Visit #4 can execute anytime after Visit #3, but should be executed before Dec 11, 2011 We will use the absolute focus position of -850 (or similar) for this new central wavelength. This is well within the range of the previous mechanism motion during the focus sweep from -1170 to +430 used in 12080. Visits 1 & 2 include exposures at the -170 as well as the -850 focus positions. The -170 exposure is required to disentangle the effects of OSM rotation from focus offset. This is required in case the initial OSM1 rotation steps do not put Lya on the detector gap. The focus=-170 exposure in Visit 2 is taken at a different FP-POS than Visit 1, these two exposures will be co-added to provide an estimate of the resolution at focus=-170 compared to focus=-850. Based upon Visit 01 data, we will be moving the G130M settings to STEP = 8026, RES1=2400, & RES=7040 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 12505( 7) - 07-Aug-2012 19:26:56 - [ 4] TARGET LIST Fixed Targets ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Tar| Target | Target | Target |Coord | Radial | Flux data No | Name | Description | Position |Eqnx | Vel. | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1 WD0320-539 CALIBRATION, DETECTOR RA=03H22M14.8010S +/- 0.1", J2000 V = 14.9 F(1000)=0.8E-12, SENSITIVITY TEST, DEC=-53D45'15.98" +/- 0.1" F(1250)=0.5E-12 INSTRUMENT SENSITIVITY TEST, POINT SPREAD FUNCTION Reference Frame: ICRS Comments: Flux from FUSE+STIS+COS.
