The Cycle 19 target list for the remaining 13 orbits is updated from the original cycle 18 request. Several more standard stars are needed for JWST flux calibration in order to: a) cover the dynamic range of all the JWST instrumentation (see Gordon, et al. 2009, JWST-STScI-001855) b) provide a selection of at least three stellar types to prevent systematics that might occur in the modeling of one type c) have at least 4 stars of each type and in each mode to reduce the 1-2% statistical uncertainty of the modeling process to <1% error-in-the-mean. To withstand the usual 20-30% attrition of the proposed standards by unforseen problems, such as unknown companions, model deficiencies, and variability, five candidate targets are required. Feedback on the proper absolute flux normalization for the 3 primary HST WD standards will ensue from all of the cross-calibration that will be done with the proposed data. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ The most efficient calibration program uses stars near the instrumental bright limit of where all modes can be obtained in one visit. Thus, the goal here is produce a bare minimum target list that satisfies the five star per JWST mode requirement with a preference for stars near the bright limit of the most sensitive JWST mode with NO consideration of full or sub-array. For purpose of establishing a baseline JWST flux calibration, stars much fainter than this bright limit are not needed. Other calibrations, such as relative sensitivity of sub-arrays and linearity require separate targets. Real Time Justification ----------------------- Calibration Justification 12682( 9) - 16-Aug-2012 13:38:14 - [ 2] ------------------------- The Cohen primary IR standard, Sirius must be observed with STIS and compared to tailored Kurucz models and MSX absolute flux measures. Sirius is the primary IR standard because of the dust ring and other oddities of Vega. Extensive modeling of Sirius has been done by Kurucz, so the direct absolute IR flux measurements can be directly compared to the absolute flux zero point of HST for the first time. Furthermore, Sirius is a target for the ACCESS rocket program and will directly tie stellar absolute fluxes to NIST lab standards. Our draft paper "Comparison of HST and Spitzer-IRAC Absolute Flux Calibrations" demonstrates an uncertainty of 2-3% in the current tie to the IRAC mid-IR fluxes and justifies the STIS orbits for the remaining unobserved 2 primary and 2 primary-candidate stars of Reach et al (2005, Re05). Additional HST standards are required to reduce the uncertainties in the comparison of the HST vs. IRAC flux calibration. For example, Re05 has four primary standards, while HST has observed only two of them to date.
