Baggett Space Telescope Science Institute Y ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Abstract Ground testing revealed an intermittent hysteresis type effect in the UVIS detector (both CCDs) at the level of ~1%, lasting hours to days. Initially found via an unexpected bowtie-shaped feature in flatfield ratios, subsequent lab tests on similar e2v devices have since shown that it is also present as simply an overall offset across the entire CCD, i.e., a QE offset without any discernable pattern. These lab tests have further revealed that overexposing the detector to count levels several times full well fills the traps and effectively neutralizes the bowtie. Each visit in this proposal acquires a set of three 3x3 binned internal flatfields: the first unsaturated image will be used to detect any bowtie, the second, highly-exposed image will neutralize the bowtie if it is present, and the final image will allow for verification that the bowtie is gone. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ This proposal is an extension of the Cycle 19 proposal (12688) in order to continue obersvations until Cycle 20 commences. A triplet of 3x3 binned internal calsystem flatfields in F475X, grouped into a single short visit, will be taken every 3rd day. The first image is unsaturated, to allow a check for the presence of bowtie features, the second image is over-exposed to fill any traps and erase any bowtie, and the final image is unsaturated, to allow an assessment of the efficacy of the bowtie removal. The filter is the same as that used in SMOV, chosen for its high throughput, blue bandpass, and location in one of the less-used wheels in the SOFA. For this proposal, the CSM (channel select mechanism) is in the IR position; if it is not, nominal commanding will move it to the IR position before the UVIS internal flats are taken. If an IR proposal is executed before this one (e.g., IR to HOLD to UVIS flat), then the CSM is not cycled. Products and goals: analysis will consist of visual inspection of unsaturated frames and image ratios, evaluation of column stacks, and trending of flatfields. Based on ground test data, bowties can be detected at the sub-percent level; if bowties are present, the efficacy of the neutralizing exposure will be quantified.
