This was last checked by program 8853 in August 2000. This proposal will use internal HITM2 lamp exposures and the 0.09X29 aperture to locally illluminate the detector with count levels ranging between 12X and 112X saturation. Dark exposures will be taken before and after the over-illlumination will be compared to check for residual images. After evaluating the results of the first two visits, the 3rd and 4th visit were redesigned to study the linearity of saturated STIS gain=4 exposures as a function of saturation level and position on the detector. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ For visit 1, we will approximate the pattern of exposures used in the previous 8853 program. A 300 s gain=1 reference dark will be followed by a 50X overexposured HITM2 gain=4 image using the 0.09x29 horizontal aperture; this in turn will be followed by two 300 s gain=1 darks to look for any persistence. Visit 1 will use only full frame exposures. Optional Parameter POS=3.6e-4 will put the center of the aperture for the lamp exposure at Y=907, putting the overillumination in a region less affected by CTI when the dark exposures are read out. For visit 2, we will attempt to probe shorter time scales. The leading darks will be a set of three 30 sec darks. Next will be a 0.09x29 HITM2 exposure producing 80% full well to verify the area of the detector directly illuminated and a 0.09x29 50X saturated exposure, followed by another three 30 s darks to look for the persistence. A 100x exposure and another three darks will then be taken. Optional Parameter POS=3.6e-4 will put the center of the aperture for the lamp exposure at Y=907. All exposures in this and subsequent visits will use SIZEAXIS2=232 and CENTERAXIS2=907 to read out only the top 232 rows of the CCD, allowing the dark to be measured more quickly after the overexposure, and allowing more exposures to be taken within the 1800 s duration of an internal visit. Visits 3 and 4 will repeat the pattern of visit 2 with differing exposure levels, and will be kept ON-HOLD pending the results of visits 1 and 2. Internal lamp exposures in the previous persistence study 8853 were done with 13142( 4) - 19-Feb-2013 13:35:22 - [ 2] MIRVIS 0.05X31NDB TUNGSTEN GAIN=1. For this program we will use instead MIRVIS 0.09X29 HITM2 GAIN=4. The darks will still be taken using GAIN=1 to minimize the read noise. We examined internal lamp exposures taken in visit 4 of program 9262 to compare lamp and aperture flux ratios. From the data in 9262 we conclude that the HITM2 to HITM1 ratio for MIRVIS is ~ 5.09 and the TUNGSTEN to HITM1 ratio is 1.83. Switching the lamp from TUNGSTEN to HITM2 then decreases required exposure times by factor of a 2.78, while switching the aperture from 0.05X31NDB to 0.09X29 decreases the needed time by factor of 6.33. In practice the FWHM of lamp images taken with the 0.09 wide aperture is quite similar to that of the 0.05 wide aperture, and so we are not spreading the incident light over a significantlly wider area of the detector. We estimated our exposure times using the 0.1 s HITM1 gain=4 exposure o6iq04i6q taken using the 0.09X29 aperture. This exposure o6iq04i6q produced ~ 25000 counts/s (gain=4) per column after bias subtraction, with a peak row rate of about 12000 DN/s/pixel. Assuming ~ 36000 DN (144000 e-) is full well, then ~ 145 s would have produced enough electrons in a typical column to fill ~ 100 rows to full well with the incident flux on the peak row at about 48X full well. Switching to HITM2 allows this same flux in only 28 s or ~ 90% of full well in only about 0.5 s. Using the Optional Parameter POS=3.6e-4 will put the OSM cylinder positions at the non-standard positions CYL1=5539, CYL3=93, CYL4=3671; this will tilt the MIRVIS so that the aperture center appears near row 907 instead of near row 515. This will put the overexposed region closer to the readout, which should reduce the effect of CTI on subsequent dark exposures. Positioning with this POS value was verfied by examining exposure obus14o8q from STIS internal CTI program 12769. Performing the equivalent shift with the SLIT-STEP parameter to move the aperture rather than the grating would have reduced the incident flux due to lamp vignetting in the field-of-view and rotated the slit image more than was desirable. All visits require < 1800 s including the time to HOME the mechanisms at the end of each visit. Because the detection and characterization of any residual glow will depend on how well the "before" and "after" darks can be compared, all DARK exposures use SAA CONTOUR=29 to minimize the chance of enhanced dark rate due to proximity to the SAA. Since the expected residual glow may have a short time constant, all exposure sequences are non-interuptible. ******CHANGES, JANUARY, 2013****** Analysis of the first two visits showed that (1) the residual afterglow was clearly detected, but was still small enough to have minimal observational consequences under most circumstances, and (2) there were non-linearities and serial-charge transfer issues for the saturated exposures. To explore these new issues, visits 3 and 4 were redesigned. Visit 3 now explores the linearity at the E1 and central positions using a series of exposures ranging from 0.4X full well to a repeat of the ~ 50X exposure (actually about 57X) used in visit 1 and 2. All exposures use HITM1 at 13142( 4) - 19-Feb-2013 13:35:22 - [ 3] default current with GAIN=4 and the 0.09X29 aperture as did the lamp exposures in visits 1 and 2. The visit 3 sequence includes 5 repeats of the 0.8X full well exposure at each position. The default position of the CCD MIRROR is used first, and these exposures use a 232 pixel high subarray centered at row 512. The MIRROR position is then changed in exposure 16 by using the POS=3.6-4 optional parameter to change the MSM cylinder positions from the default values of CYL1=866, CYL3=4921, CYL4=2739 to the revised values of CYL1=5539, CYL3=93, CYL4=3671. This change would stay in place until either a new optical element or POS value was specified. To remain centered on the lamp image, this and subsequent exposures in this visit center the readout subarray at row 907. Visit 4 simply takes a series of alternating 0.8X and 20X exposures, again using the 0.9X29 aperture with the CCD MIRROR. The HITM1 lamp is used instead of the HITM2 lamp, which increases the exposure times from 0.4 and 10 s for HITM2 to 2 and 50 s for HITM1. It is expected that the longer exposures will reduce the importance of lamp brightness fluctuations.
