INTERNAL CTE MONITOR: The charge transfer efficiency (CTE) of the ACS CCD detectors will decline as damage due to on-orbit radiation exposure accumulates. This degradation will be monitored once a cycle to determine the useful lifetime of the CCDs. All the data for this program is acquired using internal targets (lamps) only, so all of the exposures should be taken during Earth occultation time (but not during SAA passages). This program emulates the ACS pre-flight ground calibration and post-launch SMOV testing (program 8948), so that results from each epoch can be directly compared. Extended Pixel Edge Response (EPER) data will be obtained over a range of signal levels for the Wide Field Channel (WFC). The signal levels are 125, 500, 1620, 5000, 10000, and 60000 electrons at gain 2. Since Cycle 18, this monitoring program was reduced (compared to 11881) considering that there is also an external CTE monitoring program. SHORT DARKS: To improve the pixel-based CTE model at signals below ~10 DN, short dark frames are needed to obtain a statistically useful sample of clean, warm pixel trails. This program obtains a set of dark frames for each of the following exposure times: 66 s (60 s for some subarrays) and 339 s. These short darks and the 1040 s darks obtained from the CCD Daily Monitor will sample warm and hot pixels over logarithmically increasing brightness. Subarray short darks were newly added in Cycle 19 to study CTE tails in different subarray readout modes. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ INTERNAL CTE MONITOR: This program obtains a set of CTE data once per cycle. All data are acquired 13156( 3) - 04-Oct-2012 12:16:37 - [ 2] using the internal tungsten calibration lamp(s). Pointed observatory time is not required for internal CTE measurements. All the exposures will be taken during Earth occultation time, but not during South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA) passages. Extended Pixel Edge Response (EPER) data will be collected over a range of signal levels for WFC. Crossed filter elements are used for some WFC observations in order to produce the lower signal levels. Extra-large overscans are read out for EPER exposures: 75 trailing serial overscan pixels and 75 virtual overscan rows (the leading overscans are unchanged). This facilitates the measurement of both parallel and serial CTE from a single image, and will accomodate the growing deferred charge tail over the lifetime of ACS. The timing pattern for the parallel/serial EPER test is selected by setting the optional parameter CTE=JCTWE (for WFC). Key signal level is 1620 electrons, which is the signal level produced by the Fe55 ground-test source, and will allow for a better correlation of pre-launch and on-orbit CTE measurements. The last set of exposures were taken in November 2011 (Program 12731). SHORT DARKS: Sets of full-frame, 512-subarray, 1K-subarray and 2K-subarray dark frames are taken within a 24 hour window. Exposures from the last HST cycle were taken in July 2012 (Program 12731). Real Time Justification ----------------------- Calibration Justification ------------------------- Additional Comments ------------------- INTERNAL CTE MONITOR: Pre-flight ground calibration testing showed that CTE measurements from low level flat fields (below 1000e-) are affected by light leaks which depend on the shutter blade covering the detector during the readout, and the filter set in the optical path. An attempt was made during SMOV (program 8948) to calibrate this effect by obtaining pseudo-biases (short darks) with the lamp on. However, these observations failed, and were deemed infeasible. We will have to accept a faint background which cannot be removed. But since this light leak should be constant, the relative CTE trends we are trying to monitor should be unaffected. The visits are designed for about 30 minutes or less of occultation time per orbit, for good scheduleability. In 11881, Max Mutchler used SEQ WITHIN rather than GROUP WITHIN upon the advice of Program Coordinator Alison Vick, who informed him that the GROUP WITHIN cannot handle more than about 10 visits within a group, whereas SEQ WITHIN does not have this limit. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 13156( 3) -
