Single bright stars are a more precise and straightforward approach than trying to use the multitude of stars in 47 Tuc. b) Continue to investigate the ~1-2% discrepancy between the ACS and STIS flux calibrations (ACS ISR 2007-06, ACS ISR 2012-01) for different stellar effective temperature. The goal is to measure any filter bandpass shifts in ACS or rule out the possibility of shifts as the primary contributors to the ACS/STIS discrepancy for cool stars. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ With our goal of 1% accuracy in the ACS flux calibration, uncertainty in the observed counts/s of the standard stars should be <<1% to remain a small part of the error budget. Typically, the ACS photometry pushes the bright limit and has a 0.2-0.3% statistical photon error. However, a repeated annual program is required to maintain accuracies in the corrections at similar sub-percent levels for the combined effects of CTE and photon sensitivity that both change over time. This program is a follow-on to the ACS calibration programs 11889, 12392, and 12737 in the last three cycles. This program represents the minimal investment in resources required to characterize the most important WFC filters. The main photomeric inconsistency is between the WDs and the set of cooler G, F, and K stars. The red stars VB8 (M7), 2M0038+18 (L3.5) and 2M0559-14 (T5) were important contributors to the study in ACS ISR 2007-06 but would not fit in the cycles 18 and 19 orbit allocation. In cycle 20, VB8 will be re-introduced to the observing plan in order to help illuminate the nature of the inconsistencies. If 13162( 2) - 03-Oct-2012 13:27:03 - [ 2] VB8 is truly non-variable at the longer wavelengths, then observations in F775W, F814W, and F850LP will strongly constrain the shape of any possible change to the shape of these filter bandpass functions. While WFC3 has chosen to broaden its photometric calibration program with a larger set of standard stars, ACS proposes a smaller more efficient set, which are measured annually to provide confidence in the results at the sub-percent level required to study the 2% discrepancy. Not all of the ACS set are observed every year, although both ACS and the annual tie-in from repeated STIS observations are required for the primary set of 3 WDs. STIS observation of G191B2B and GD71 are included in another program, leaving GD153 (2 orbits) for this program to support the ACS observations by exactly quantifying the STIS sensitivity losses and by measuring the internal precision of this set of three primary WD standards. While the three hot primary WDs are required to provide a direct tie to the fundamental flux scale and to confirm the relative STIS and ACS sensitivities in the present epoch, the cooler stars do not to need to be observed every cycle. However, to firmly establish precise and reliable standard star response levels, the minimum set of three separate epochs is required for each of the four cooler stars with both ACS and STIS. The STIS SEDs are also utilized by other instruments, especially WFC3, to insure proper cross-calibration across the entire HST observatory.
