Dates, Deadlines, Stipends, and More
The 2019 Space Astronomy Summer Program will run for 9 weeks, from Monday, June 17 to Friday, August 16 at the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI). Unfortunately, we cannot accept participants requiring alternate start dates or who cannot stay for at least eight weeks of the 9-week program.
Stipends and Subsidies
The stipend for the 2019 program is $650 per week, which is comparable to other astronomical summer internships in the U.S. We provide travel and housing assistance. The travel subsidy also includes round-trip travel to Baltimore, Maryland, by air, train, or personal vehicle.
We also offer coordinated student housing options and subsidize roughly one third of the housing costs for students who elect this housing option. Learn more about housing and transportation.
Applications will be accepted January 1–31, 2019.
The application deadline is 11:59 p.m. EST, Thursday, January 31, 2019. Reference letters are due by 11:59 p.m. EST, Tuesday, February 5, 2019. We facilitate the reference letter process by emailing the individuals named as references on each application.
Students who are non-U.S. citizens will need a visa to work in the U.S. regardless of where their college or university is located. We provide assistance to qualified international applicants in the acquisition of appropriate visas and other work documents required to work at STScI. If you are accepted, our Human Resources department will contact you to provide assistance in obtaining a work visa.
