The Astronomy Tools and Applications Branch (ASTTA) develops some of the most well known software products for the astronomical community ranging from proposal tools to data reduction packages and applications.

ASTTA is internally divided in four development areas:

The Astronomer's Proposal Tool (APT) develops software used by Astronomers to plan their Hubble Science and to describe how their observations should be carried out by the Spacecraft;

The Science Analysis Tools (SAT) and the Science Analysis Applications (SAA) are responsible for data analysis tools, such as PyRAF and STSDAS, fully-fledged data analysis applications that calibrate the HST instruments in the HST calibration pipeline, and the improvement of data analysis environments for astronomers using Python tools;

The Data Management System (DMS) is responsible for some of the development of the data processing and archive systems at STScI. These systems include the Data Archive and Distribution System, StarView, a Java-based GUI to the archive and the web interface to the Multimission Archive at Space Telescope.
