ACS Status: February 21, 2007
The ACS Solar Blind Channel (SBC) has been reactivated using the
ACS Side-1 electronics. Procedures to return the SBC to service
proceeded normally on February 19 and 20. The SBC is
performing as expected, and initial analyses of flat field images
obtained after activation indicate that contamination of the
ACS optics and SBC detector window as a result of the outgassing
event after the Side-2 failure is minimal. The
first SBC science observations after reactivation were obtained on
February 20 in support of the New Horizons flyby of Jupiter.
Additional SBC science and calibration observations are scheduled
for the next several weeks. Now that the SBC is operating
nominally, the remaining Cycle 15 SBC observations will be
executed as the HST observing schedule allows.
The ACS Wide Field Channel (WFC) and High Resolution Channel (HRC)
remain inoperable at the present time. The Anomaly Review Board
investigating the Side-2 failure is considering options for
on-orbit tests to help pinpoint the location of the failure and
clarify what might be needed during SM4 to restore the CCD channels to
service.
