Specview works without installation of this file, but in that case it retrieves the line identification data from remote servers over the network. Having the line lists locally installed expedites their loading.
Specview works without installation of this file, but in that case it retrieves the data from the Space Telescope Science Institute web site. Having the standard spectrograms locally installed expedites their loading.
The only differences between these versions is the startup script file (specview Unix shell script, or SPECVIEW.BAT DOS script), and the packaging (Unix tar file, or self-extracting zip file). Everything else is identical in between the two versions.
Specview is distributed under an Open Source BSD-style license.
