Internal Structure of High-z Galaxies with NGST

Authors: Massimo Stiavelli1,2,3
Models of galaxy evolution are used to determine the redshift interval, sampled in the 1-5µm wavelength window, over which metallicity, internal extinction, and internal kinematics of high redshift galaxies can be derived from emission and absorption line measurements. A multi-aperture multi-object spectrograph is the optimal solution for this kind of study, since current data such as the HDF images suggest that the Universe is only sparsely populated with luminous objects at the spectroscopic magnitude limit of NGST.
