Tidal waves in accretion discs
A tidal wave developing in a cold disc (e.g. in CVs) due to a small
mass companion.

Click here to see it (MPEG version 9.2Mb! this one is HEAVY and SLOW).
-
The inner disc is shown in details
here (MPEG version 6.0Mb!).
-
Eccentric (m=1) oscillations appear during the relaxation and
might explain Quasi-periodic Oscillations
(QPOs)
(MPEG version 0.5Mb)
CVs.
-
Eventually a Papaloizou-Pringle instability
develops in the inner disc
(m=8 mode),
(MPEG version 1.2Mb).
rotating counter clockwise
(stroboscopic effects might let you think the opposite).
Numerical simulations of a tidal wave induced by a planet in a
protostellar disc, and the development of a Paploizou-Pringle instability
(initially an m=3 mode and eventually an m=2 mode)
at the inner reflective boundary.
