We present first results from an HST program (GO-8669, PI: van der Marel) to investigate the structural and star forming properties in the nuclear regions of the Toomre sequence of merging galaxies. Here we show color composites made out of F555W (V-band) and F814W (I-band) images, together with H_alpha and color index images of the nuclear regions. A few preliminary results regarding the nuclear properties of the ionized gas are presented.
