Observed nuclear gas kinematics for M87. William Herschel Telescope
(WHT) ground-based data [R9]
(middle three curves) already revealed rapid gas motions and rotation,
that are well fitted by a seeing-convolved model with a few billion
solar mass black hole (solid curves). The higher resolution HST data
obtained later by Harms et al. (1994) (upper and lower curves), have
made the case for a BH unambiguous.
