Description
Speaker: Jason Tumlinson (STScI)
It is is common to think of galaxies as vast collections of billions of stars. Such a view is only partly correct, for it overlooks the great clouds of gas and dust in galaxies; the clouds from which those stars were born. How galaxies of all types acquire that gas is a major unanswered question in modern astrophysics. The study of this question has been developing for over six decades. However, late-breaking results from Hubble's new Cosmic Origins Spectrograph has provided some fresh insight.
