This talk presents the history of the design of what is now the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope observatory. Significant evolution from the 2010 Astrophysics decadal submission to flight is traced, with discussion of design drivers and design stages. The current state of the Observatory elements currently being assembled and readied for integration and test is briefly reviewed.
