Learn about JWST’s Known Scientific Performance

July 12, 2022

About This Article

Now that JWST commissioning is complete, in-flight performance information has been released to the community through a summary report and updates to JDox. Astronomers planning to use JWST for scientific research are encouraged to read these documents.

The report — Characterization of JWST Science Performance from Commissioning — is now available; it summarizes the actual science performance of JWST as known on 12 July 2022, and how the actual performance differs from pre-launch expectations. The report quantitatively describes the performance of the spacecraft, telescope, science instruments, and ground system, as well as the overall observatory performance.

JDox, the JWST User Documentation website, has been updated and includes a number of new articles highlighting data features and artifacts that have been identified in JWST in-flight data. It also describes known issues that may be present in the current pipeline products, as well as other articles to help users understand the status of the Observatory. Refer to the Latest Update information at the bottom of each article to see if an article has had significant updates made. Refer to the Breaking News  for a summary of changes in JDox for this release. Many updates from commissioning are still in progress and will only become available in JDox in the coming months. JDox will be updated as needed to get the most current information to the community in a timely manner.
