STScI Invites Scientists To Submit Proposals for JWST Cycle 2

November 15, 2022

About This Article

We are pleased to announce that the JWST Cycle 2 Call for Proposals for General Observer (GO) time has been released, with up to 5,000 hours available in this cycle. Observing programs will be offered in multiple categories, determined by program size and other criteria.

Program Category Size Estimated Allocation*
Small programs ≤ 25 hours 2,900 hours
Medium programs >25 and ≤ 75 hours 1,250 hours
Large programs >75 hours 850 hours

* Subject to TAC adjustment.

In addition, the Cycle 2 call supports Survey Programs to fill gaps identified in the scheduling process. New for Cycle 2, we invite Joint Proposals requesting ALMA, Chandra, HST, NASA Keck, NOIRLab, and/or XMM-Newton observations in addition to JWST observations for the same targets. Finally, in order to reduce the risk of micrometeroid impact, JWST will be scheduled to limit pointing in the orbital direction of motion. Proposers are strongly encouraged to minimize overlap of their observations with the Micrometeoroid Avoidance Zone (MAZ). Further details are available on the APT Micrometeroid Avoidance page.

Observers requiring time-critical observations that were not requested in Cycle 1 may apply to the Director's Discretionary Time program.

Proposals are due by 8 p.m. US Eastern Standard Time on January 27, 2023. The Cycle 2 Telescope Allocation Committee will meet in mid-April 2023, with selections announced in May 2023.

For more details, please consult the full Call for Proposals. Questions may be submitted to the JWST Help Desk.
