AAS 240

The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) will have staff members participating in the 240th Meeting of the American Astronomical Society (AAS) at the Pasadena Convention Center in Pasadena, CA, June 12–16, 2022. Throughout the week, an exhibit booth and several associated events will be available highlighting the missions we support on behalf the science community. There will be technical presentations in instrument sessions, a wide variety of science presentations, workshops, splinter sessions, press releases, and NASA Hyperwall talks.

The STScI Town Hall will report on the status of our existing and upcoming missions and describe new opportunities designed to advance astrophysics through the 2020s. Ample time will be available to confer with experts from Hubble, Webb, Roman, MAST, NASA’s Universe of Learning, and other areas throughout the meeting and in the exhibit booth.

Effective Astronomy Visualizations for Research, Outreach, and Learning

This workshop’s goal is to connect the many AAS communities (including students, educators, communicators, developers, and researchers) with shared interests in astronomy visualization. Facilitated by NASA’s Universe of Learning, it will contribute to an expanding community of practice for those engaged in astronomy visualization, or “AstroViz.”

Testing Hierarchical Models of Galaxy Evolution with the Roman Space Telescope

Roman will greatly expand our sampling of the structures, colors, and spectroscopic properties of galaxies over a significant fraction of cosmic time. This session will bring together observers and theorists to discuss how to optimize both the observing strategy and the simulation strategy to make the most incisive tests of theoretical models.

Tuesday, June 14; 10:00–11:30 a.m.

STScI Town Hall

STScI will report on the status of our existing and upcoming missions and describe new opportunities designed to advance astrophysics through the 2020s. We will highlight key initiatives associated with our major missions. The Town Hall includes presentations from STScI leads and community members. We will have time for discussion to receive community input regarding new capabilities and to answer questions about our activities in the coming year.

The New Great Observatories

The “Astro2020 Pathways to Discovery” report envisions a multi-wavelength, multi-decade fleet of New Great Observatories co-operating on transformative scientific discoveries in the 2040s and beyond. This splinter session will bring together scientists and technologists to foster a new inclusive community in support of this ambitious aim.

First Results from the ULLYSES Hubble Director’s Discretionary Program on Young Low- and High-Mass Stars

In this splinter session, we will give community members who have been actively leading coordinated observations and/or analyzing ULLYSES data the opportunity to present and share their initial results with other community members. This session will generate momentum in the ongoing analysis of this very large program (the largest ever executed with Hubble) and give the scientific community at large who are interested in science from ULLYSES a chance to learn about the ongoing work being carried out with ULLYSES data.

Tuesday, June 14; 2:00–3:00 p.m.

Hall C

James Webb Space Telescope Town Hall

Expected to take place toward the end of commissioning and shortly before the first science observations, this Town Hall will look back on commissioning and summarize the activities to prepare the telescope for science. We will discuss the science timeline through Cycle 2. The program will feature speakers from the JWST project office and STScI, and will provide an opportunity for the community to ask questions and provide feedback.

Towards an Improved NASA Hubble Fellowship Program

This splinter session will obtain community input that will help guide NASA’s response to, and implementation of, the findings and recommendations of a recent review panel. The panelists will consist of (1) the NHFP Leads, who are charged with the day-to-day running of the program, (2) representatives from Space Telescope Science Institute, which is charged with administering the program, (3) representatives from NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, which is charged with overseeing the program, and (4) NASA Headquarters, which is responsible for the overall success of the program.

Roman Town Hall

The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope (formerly WFIRST) is a NASA flagship mission planned for launch in the mid 2020s. This session will cover the status of the project and upcoming opportunities for community involvement in planning and executing the science and technology demonstration aspects of Roman. The focus will be on Roman opportunities: ROSES call, Astrophysics Survey RFI, etc. It will be followed by a reception.
