Howard Bushouse

Dr. Howard Bushouse currently leads the team of developers in the Science Instrument Calibration Software Branch (SCSB) who are implementing the JWST Calibration Pipeline. The pipeline processes all data coming from JWST, removing detector artifacts and calibrating the data, to make it ready for scientific analysis.

He has been involved in calibration pipeline and analysis software development and maintenance ever since coming to STScI in 1993, and over that time has worked on the HST FOS, NICMOS, and WFC3 pipelines. He also led the ground calibration efforts for WFC3 at Goddard Space Flight Center, before the instrument was installed in HST in 2009. Before coming to STScI, he worked on developing a new calibration pipeline for the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) satellite.

Dr. Bushouse's research interests lie primarily in the area of galaxy evolution, having done many in-depth studies of the star forming characteristics of interacting galaxies and the ways in which interactions affect their star formation properties. More recently he's been involved in studies of the Galactic Center, primarily aimed at better understanding the physical processes going on in and around the supermassive black hole that resides in the center of our galaxy.
