This is a modified version of the re-submitted phase II proposal GO_10532_submit2 . Submission 4 corrected a visit number (former 8, now 7 after re-numbering) in observing description, point 8). Changes are in order to solve problems with schedulability of some visits. 1) Former target 06/visit 06: removed, because it was unschedulable; exchanged for new target 'DEEP2_33018699'. The new target is target no. 8, and is observed in visit no. 8. All other targets and visits 1-8 have been re-numbered. This does not the affect the order of targets (visits) 09-15 (09-0F), which have the same numbers as in the last submission. 2) Visit 09: the ORIENT requirement was relaxed to have at least the ACS parallels in a favourable position. The new 'relaxed' ORIENTs are somewhat tighter (336 to 24 and 93 to 248 deg) than the previously given 'relaxed' ORIENTs (336 to 32 and 93 to 255 deg). If the former do not allow scheduling, the latter should be tried. 3) Visit 0C: because favourable ORIENTs were not possible to schedule, the ORIENTs were dropped, and no parallels will be observed, instead the same 2-band NIC-2 scheme as in visit 8 was adopted. These were culled from over 20,000 Keck spectra collected as part of DEEP and are unique among high redshift massive galaxy samples in being kinematically selected. We intend to test whether these potentially very young galaxies are likely precursors to massive local disks, assuming no further merging. NIC-2 images provide rest-frame optical morphologies that will show whether they are normal disky systems or instead more disturbed looking objects with multiple subcomponents, mergers, peculiar structure, etc. NIC-2 provides near-IR resolutions sufficient to enable measurements of bulges and disks subcomponents. The near-IR will fill a critical gap in the broad-band SED photometry of the galaxy and its subcomponents to estimate mean stellar ages and stellar masses and to assess whether old stellar bulges and disks are in place at that time. Finally, this sample will yield the first statistically significant results on the $z > 1$ evolution of the Tully-Fisher relation for massive galaxies. In addition, we propose parallel observations with ACS WFC (V and I bands) and WFPC2 (I-band). These will target up to 700 galaxies at redshifts 0.7 ... 1.2 for which the DEEP2 survey has obtained precision redshifts and high-resolution kinematic data. The added HST morphology and color information will allow a variety of detailed studies on dynamical, structural, and photometric evolution of galaxies.
1) Overview: This project aims at high-resolution NICMOS 2 H-band imaging of spectroscopically selected massive disk galaxy candidates at redshifts >1. The images will provide rest-frame R- to I-band morphologies (disk sizes, inclinations, bulge-to-disk ratios, surface brightnesses), and allow to identify regularized disks vs disturbed/merging objects and to correct rotation curves for seeing and inclination. The detailed kinematics and rest-frame morphologies make it possible to directly compare high-redshift and local massive disks and Tully-Fisher samples, and to constrain the upper mass end of the TF relation at z>1. The observations are therefore designed to optimize image cosmetics on larger scales, to maximize information on extended, low surface brightness structures (high redshift disks). We ask to schedule the visits in SAA-free orbits, if this is possible without delaying the scheduling by several months. ACS WFC and WFPC2 parallel observations provide additional morphological information for up to 1000 galaxies for which the DEEP2 redshift survey has obtained precision redshifts and high-resolution kinematics. Here we try to maximize field coverage by giving ORIENT requirements. However these ORIENTs shall be relaxed or dropped if they would require to postpone an observation beyond early 2006 that could otherwise be taken earlier. 2) NICMOS 2 observations: A sample of 15 candidate massive disks shall be observed with NICMOS 2 in the F160W (minimum background) filter, one orbit per object. Each orbit is split into 4 dithered pointings (see 'Dither pattern' below); the instrument shall observe in MULTIACCUM mode to control cosmic ray removal, with a SPARS64 readout sequence. 3) Dither pattern: We choose to dither the objects on all 4 quadrants of NICMOS2, aiming at averaging larger-scale residuals from shading and flatfield inaccuracies, and avoiding the problematic column 128, as well as problems at quadrant limits that may arise from the pedestal effect. The dither positions are not on the quadrant centers, but displaced from the latter towards the detector center, to ensure that the targets are fully on the detector, even for coordinate uncertainties of 1.5 arcsec and unexpectedly large galaxy sizes. The positions are not symmetric with respect to the quadrant centers, to allow removal of quadrant-symmetric electronic artifacts such as electronic bars. The coronographic hole is avoided. This asymmetric pattern is realized not through pre-defined patterns, but through 4 individual exposures in one orbit, with POS-TARG special requirements. This also allows to use different filters for the ACS parallels (see below). The dither steps are adjusted to provide half-pixel subpixel dithering in x and y; these adjustments take the geometric distortion of NICMOS2 into account, i.e. sub-sample physical pixels. 4) Parallel observations: WFPC2 parallels are scheduled in the F814W filter for all 4 dither pointings, to provide reliable cosmic ray rejection. The ACS WFC provides better cosmic ray discrimination, so these parallels shall be observed in two filters at two dither pointings each, the F606W filter at dither positions 1 and 2, and in the F814W filter at positions 3 and 4. At minimum loss in total depth with respect to the F814W filter in all 4 pointings, this provides very valuable spatially resolved color information. The dither pattern will bridge the ACS detector gap. 5) South Atlantic Anomaly: If at all possible, our pointings should be scheduled in SAA-free orbits. Post-SAA darks cannot fully remove the enhanced pixel-to-pixel noise present after SAA passages. Even more important, treatment of SAA effects involves additional treatments of the pedestal etc., likely to leave low surface brightness residuals on larger scales. These are very problematic for extended low surface brightness structures we want to analyze. If however scheduling in SAA-free orbits proves impossible, or will delay scheduling of a visit by several months, this requirement can be relaxed, best to low-SAA-impact passages. 6) ORIENTS, Schedulability: The ORIENT special requirements specified for each visit put both the ACS WFC and WFPC2 parallel observations into a DEEP2 redshift survey field, and will greatly enhance the scientific payback of these HST orbits. These ORIENTs should be observed if possible. However, if this would delay an observation beyond early 2006 that could otherwise be taken earlier, we ask you to relax the ORIENT to the range which would still put ACS into the DEEP2 field, given in the comment field of each visit where available. If this does not resolve the delay, please drop the ORIENT requirement completely. The requirement of SAA-free orbits is of higher priority than the ORIENT requirements. If ORIENT needs to be dropped for an orbit in order to schedule it SAA-free, please do so. 7) Object fluxes, integration times: We have ground-based BRI, yet no NIR fluxes for the objects we propose to observe. We used these fluxes and DEEP2 redshifts to derive rest-frame colors, which made it possible to choose galaxy template spectra for the NICMOS ETC. Rather than in an integral source detection, we are interested in S/N per pixel at those limiting surface brightnesses we need to reach to study the disk structure to the turnover point of the rotation curve (approx. 24 rest frame B mag arcsec**-2, corresponding to 25.5 observed I mag arcsec**-2 at the sample redshift). We also used NICMOS2 data previously observed by one of the CoIs of this proposal (N. Vogt) to confirm exposure time needs. 8) Two-band NICMOS imaging where parallels outside DEEP fields: Schedulability limits for visits 07 and 0C do not allow to place parallels in our survey fields. For these visits, the parallels were dropped. This allows more flexible orbit subdivision, and the NICMOS 2 observations are taken in 2 filters (F110W, F160W) at each of the four dither positions to obtain rest-frame color information. Total sensitivity loss is small if both F110W and F160W are later co-added for overall structural analyses.
