Recent NICMOS camera 1 multi-band photometric imaging of the companion candidate, 0.77" (54 AU projected) from 2M1207 - initially detected at longer wavelengths with VLT/NACO - implicate an object of several Jupiter masses based on cooling models of EGPs and the likely age of 2M1207 (~ 8 Myr). Physical companionship of the EGP candidate with 2M1207 has been established at the 99.1% level of confidence via second-epoch NICMOS astrometric observations. Diagnostic spectra in the 0.8 to 1.9 micron region (unobtainable from the ground and overlapping the NICMOS imaging observations) will (a) critically inform on the physical nature of the EGP, (b) provide currently non-existing information to test/constrain theoretical models of EGP properties and evolution, and (c) unequivocally confirm the imaging of a bone fide EGP. Background light from 2M1207 would normally swamp the EGP spectrum with direct spectral imaging. To obviate this, we propose PSF-subtracted grism spectra of the EGP using 2M1207 as its own spectral template via two-orientation high-contrast image subtraction. The temporal stability of the HST+NICMOS PSF enables self-subtractions of targets at different field orientations resulting in contrast enhancements of 5 to 6 stellar magnitudes in the circumstellar background at ~ 0.8" at these wavelengths. With the grism field oriented to place the EGP "above" and "below" 2M1207 (at two observational epochs) two independent spectra of the EGP will emerge from a difference image. This prototypical spectrum will serve to test and improve upon current models of young EGPs which predict flux suppression by molecular absorption in their atmospheres.
We are attempting to obtain a near-IR spectrum of the planetary-mass companion to the young brown dwarf 2M1207A with NICMOS grism spectraphotometry in the G096 and G141 bands. In doing so we are pushing NICMOS spectraphotometry into a significantly higher contrast regime than has been previously attempted. The angular separation of 2M1207A/b is only 0.774", with brightness ratios appx 1000:1 at 1 micron, (G096) and 100:1 at 1.6 microns (G141). To obtain G096 and G141 spectra to the requisite S/N (see our Phase 1 proposal for details) we require a TOTAL integration time of appx 57 ksec in G096 and 10 ksec in G141 using an 28-orbit spectral imaging strategy we detail for implementation here. We also use two orbits for a calibration target HD 102982. NOTES 1: On 25 May 2005 we were informed of an increase in our orbit allocation to a total of 30 orbits to accommodate a problem in the ETC from which our deep spectral imaging in G096 was planned. We now use 14 orbits in each of two epochs to observe 2M1207A/b. NOTE 2: On 26 May 2005 our request to obtain "special calibration" frames for SPARS128 sampling was granted, and we include these frames in this Phase 2 observing plan (see calibration justification). --> We request that our spectral imaging and dark calibration visits be scheduled in non-SAA impacted orbits, as discussed with K. Noll (NICMOS group), to the greatest extent which scheduling and priority will allow. I. 2M1207A/b OBSERVATIONS. 1) We observe at two epoch constrained by absolute orientation angles. 2) At each epoch we identically observe in fourteen one-visit orbits. Each set of 14 visits are identical with the exception of small pointing offsets prior to the start of each orbit's exposure sequence. Following the target imaging we are taking SPARS128 calibration dark frames during target occultation (see Calibration Justification). The two sets of orbits are identical except for their orientation. 3) Each epochal set of 14 one-orbit visits is pointed first in the form of a 3x3 pattern relative to NIC3-FIX, specified by a POS TARG for the first exposure in each visit, where all subsequent exposure in each visit carries a SAME POS AS requirement. The POS TARGS create a pattern with offsets of +/-3.3333 pixels in all directions (X and Y combinations) about a central point. We then do offsets to repeat the first five points of the pattern (i.e., the corners and the center) - BUT relative to NIC3. For NICMOS Camera 3 the pixel scales are: XSCALE = 203.308 MAS/PIXEL, YSCALE = 202.707 mas/pixel, so the magnitude of the POS TARGs in X and Y are: |X POS TARG| = 0.677687", |Y POS TARG| = 0.675683" 4) Each set of 14 visits is constrained to be at the same field orientation. 5) Visits 01-0E, inclusive are specified at an ORIENT angle of 135.4 to 136.4 deg. Visits 61-6E, inclusive are specified at an orient angle of 301.2 to 303.2 deg. Absolute orients are given for visits 01 and 61. Narrow band filters are used to prevent PSF core saturation. We have no realtime requirements. Acquisition of SPARS128 dark frames has been approved by STScI (K. Noll 26 May 2005). SPARS128 is a new detector clocking/readout mode which has never before been used and calibration data does not exist. We take darks in each of our two observational epochs two (roughly 6 months apart dictated by target constraints). In our Second submission (but now re-revised by request of STScI) of our Phase 2 plan we had set up those darks as follows: At each epoch we GROUPed the darks (each as a separate visit) within two days. We expect it possible to actually schedule each group in two non-SAA impacted pieces on either "side" of SAA impacted orbits. Each group should be scheduled within +/- 1 week of our grism observations of 2M1207. We would LIKE to have the darks scheduled as closely in time as possible to the science observations, but anytime within 1 week is acceptable. STScI has asked us to move these darks into the science visits for orbit accounting reasons (even though DARKS are taken as non-pointed time), and we have done so. Note to our PC: If this hinders schedualability due to the need for SAA-impacted orbits (as requested for the science target, but of course DARKS must be taken SAA free) - is it perfectly acceptable with us to restructure the DARKS in their own, separate, visits to ease schedualbility. Reality is we use no additional pointed spacecraft time. Note: Prior to taking the calibration darks we execute three NREAD=25 BLANK ACCUM exposures of minimum exposure duration (TPG clocking time = 0s, but as accounted by APT 14.278s. These are not calibration frames. We have inserted them as a method to mitigate residual persistent excess charge which would manifest itself as image latency in the SPARS128 dark from the filtered spectral registration images which would otherwise immediately proceed it. The NICMOS IDT has demonstrated this is an effective strategy for reducing the problems associated with image persistence. NOTES ON ORIENTATIONS: The separation of 2M1207A/b is 0.774" with a PA for the planet-mass companion of 125.4 deg. Ideally we would orient the NIC-3 aperture such that the line joining A/b is orthogonal to the direction of the G096 spectral dispersion. This would be at an ORIENT of 170 (or 350) degrees, given the aperture reference angle of 224.5 deg and as the G096 dispersion is tilted 3 degrees w.r.t. the image +X axis (with the +X end of the spectrum tilted toward +Y). APT, however, indicates this ORIENT is unschedualable. We have examined the possible roll (orient) ranges which ATP gives as: Orient 129.7 - 133.5 deg (04 Jul 05 - 11 Jul 05) Orient 286.3 - 302.2 deg (28 Dec 05 - 07 Jan 06) Orient 126.5 - 136.4 deg (31 Jul 06 - 03 Aug 06) and find the largest ORIENT angles possible in the 31JUL06-03AUG06 and 28DEC05-07JAN06 windows, i.e., 136.4 deg and 302.2 deg non-optimal, but sufficient. ----> If, by some miracle, we could push the orient range (for example, if we might be allowed to plan this is in an extended window in July 2005 at the start of Cycle 14 BEFORE with 3 gyro guiding (which might open up the available Orients) before the switch anticipated switch to 2 gyro guiding now presumed not until mid-August 2005, that would be of very significant benefit. Here, we CONSTRAIN the absolute orientations of Visits 10-19 and 01-09 to 136.4 and 302.2 deg, respectively. LARGER ORIENTS WOULD BE DESIRABLE IF IT WERE POSSIBLE TO DO THESE OBSERVATIONS OFF-NOMINAL ROLL OR AT LATER DATES (WE DO NOT CONSTRAIN THE DATES, ONLY THE ORIENTATIONS) THEN THE END OF THE ROLL WINDOWS IMPLY.
