Our Phase II Proposal has been created for 10 orbits in 6 visits, one visit per target. Our phase I proposal was awarded 9 orbits as we applied for. However, our esitmate of 9 orbits was based upon a CVZ opportunity that was available for one target (NGC6090). According to the Visit Planner this CVZ could not be scheduled and hence, an extra orbit was necessary. It was stated in our Phase I Proposal that we would need an extra orbit if the CVZs couldn't be scheduled. The other CVZ targat (IRAS08) could be scheduled and has been used in our PhaseII. Also, for some our 2-orbit visits, we switch between the HRC and the WFC in between orbits. The use of WFC has been approved. We have checked that our offsets don't affect our program -- these warnings can be ignored. Lyman alpha morphology of local starburst galaxies Our pilot imaging study of 6 local galaxies using ACS/SBC in the cosmologically important Lyman-alpha line has begun to reveal intriguing results. Here we propse ACS/HRC imaging of this sample, the approval of the which will allow for a significant increase in the impact of the original study and extend the limits of current understanding of Lyman-alpha escape. With this data we can accurately calibrate our Lyman-alpha line-only images and explore for the first time Lyman-alpha fluxes and equivalent widths in spatially resolved systems. These data would also allow us to test the current models of Lyman-alpha escape mechanisms and investigate possible correlations between Lyman-alpha emission and other local parameters such as age and internal reddening. The addition of high-resolution H-alpha data allows us to quantitatively study the decoupling of Lyman-alpha from non-resonant radiation and spatially explore the destruction and attenuation of Lyman-alpha. The study will go a long way towards resolving the outstanding issues complicating the interpretation of high redshift studies and the use of Lyman-alpha to quantitatively study the distant universe.
To match our ACS/SBC data we need to reach S/N of at least 5 per 2x2 pixel resolution element for a blue surface brightness of 20 mag/arcsec^2 and an assumed continuum spectral slope of beta=-1. This will insure that in diffuse regions we can reach levels 3 magnitudes fainter by smoothing over regions up to 1x1 arcsec, and allow us to detect extended diffuse Lyman alpha as we did in our study of ESO338-IG04. The crucial filters for modeling the continuum slope in the UV are F220W, F330W and F435W which combined with our SBC/F140LP data, will allow us to fully exploit our SBC Lyman alpha data for the sample. We then use FR656N to observe the Halpha emission line with F550M to determine the nearby continuum. A short F814W image is then used to find the continuum slope between F550M and the I-band. The optimal ACS observing strategy to fully exploit the sensitivity of the WFC, and the UV and high-resolution capabilities of the HRC is to assign the observations as follows: * HRC: F220W; F330W * WFC: F435W; F550M; FR656N In addition, a short F814W exposure is included in the HRC observations for targets where no I-band image is available in the archive We assme Halpha equivalent widths of 100Angstroms. To reach the required sensitivites as outlined above and in our phase I proposal, we require the following observations (all split observations are dithered using POS-TARG to reduce the overhead of re-pointing the telescope when using patterns): * F220W: 1800s (3 x 600s) * F330W: 800s (2 x 400s) * F435W: 400s (2 x 200s) * FR656N: 1200s (2 x 600s) * F550M: 600s (2 x 300s) * F814W: 100s (1 x 100s) This can easily be accomodated by 2 orbits: the first using the HRC, obtaining F220W, F330W and F814W; the second using the WFC and obtaining the rest. This is the approach implemented for two targets: ESO350-IG38 (Visit 1) and NGC6090 (Visit 2). For two other targets (SBS0335-052, visit 3; and Tololo65, visit 4), archival I-band data exist. The 100 second F814W exposure is therefore removed and the time dedicated to the F220W observations. For one target (IRAS08339+6517, visit 5) a schedulable CVZ exists which we have exploited and included all our observations in the one orbit. Since we cannot change camera, all our observations are performed using the HRC -- exposure times are slightly reduced. (During phase I we found a possible CVZ for NGC6090 but according to the visit planner this is not schedulable.) The remaining target (ESO338-IG04, visit 6) the UV and I-band data have already been obtained with the ACS and WFPC2. All that remains is to obtain Halpha online (FR656N) and continuum (F550M). We will use the WFC to obtain these images in one orbit. For all galaxies we have ground-based long-slit spectra covering Halpha, allowing us to constrain the [NII] contribution within the FR656N bandpass.
