Extragalactic low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) can constrain galaxy histories, but we must first understand whether LMXBs present in the fields of galaxies were formed primordially in situ or dynamically in globular clusters (GCs). We propose 8 orbits of HST-ACS on NGC1023, one of the nearest, massive lenticular galaxies, which will complement 192 ks of ACIS-S observations. We will detect ~70 Field-LMXBs and ~400 stellar clusters. Our comparison of the spatial distributions of field-LMXBs, GCs, and field stars in NGC1023 will constrain the origin of field LMXBs. Our observations will also perform the most complete census of diffuse star clusters (DSCs) to date. By probing the connection of DSCs to LMXBs, we will also test the dynamical formation model of LMXBs in stellar clusters.

ACS/WFC observations will be used to characterize globular clusters (GCs) and diffuse stellar clusters, and to identify objects unrelated to NGC 1023. Combined with Chandra observations, we will compare the spatial distributions of low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs), GCs, and field stars in NGC1023 and constrain the origin of LMXBs that appear in the field of the galaxy. We will perform an 8 pointing mosaic to provide complete coverage of NGC 1023 beyond the isophotal Ks = 20 mag arcsec^-2 surface. For the two pointings covering the central field, we will observe in F475W for 776s total exposure and in F850LP for 1226s total exposure using 2-point hot-pixel dither patterns plus a 90s exposure to avoid saturation at the galaxy center. For the remaining pointings, we will combine F475W observations for 768s total exposure using a 2-point hot-pixel dither pattern and F850LP observations for 1308s total exposure using a 3-point hot-pixel dither pattern. Our chosen dither patterns optimize the rejection of hot pixels and cosmic rays while maximizing total exposure time. NGC 1023 is schedulable for ~25 days.
