Unveiling the Dark Baryons: The First Imaging of Circumgalactic OVI in Emission Hot gas outflows through the extended circumgalactic medium of galaxies are likely responsible for regulating star formation, shaping the galaxy luminosity function and mass-metallicity relation, and enriching the IGM. Over a wide temperature range of 10^5 K to 10^6 K, the cooling of this hot CGM flow is dominated by OVI (lambda=1032,1038 AA) emission. Thus OVI plays a vital role in driving, cooling, and generally probing galaxy outflows. The difficulty is that OVI gas is typically only observed in absorption against bright QSOs: consequently spatial information for a single galaxy has never been available, rendering it impossible to estimate the mass of (missing) baryons in this phase and its impact on braking galaxy superwinds/enriching the IGM. We have devised a method of using ACS/SBC filters to observe and map emission lines in the far UV, which has been tried and tested many times with Lyman alpha. We will now turn the method to image OVI emission from a more redshifted (z=0.23) extreme starbursting galaxy. The observations will map OVI in emission for the first time. From this we will calculate the allowed ranges of gas density, temperature, and metallicity that can give rise to the observed emission and provide the first estimate the OVI mass from resolved information. New constraints on galactic wind models and input for cosmological simulations may be expected. This work is exploratory, but the possible scientific return is extremely high. Results will be used to guide subsequent HST observations and the next generations of UV-capable satellites, and thus it is truly in the spirit of the UV initiative. This programme will obtain various observations of a single galaxy that hosts an extreme starburst. The redshift of the object is 0.2359. We will obtain: 16 orbits imaging, split between ACS/SBC/F125LP and F140LP, to observe OVI and adjacent continuum 3 orbits imaging, split between ACS/SBC/F150LP and F165LP, to observe Lyman alpha and adjacent continuum 1 orbit imaging that includes WFC3/UVIS/F390W, F475W, and F850LP to target the optical continuum 1 orbit imaging with ACS ACS/WFC/FR782N and FR601N, to obtain narrowband images of redshifted H-alpha and H-beta. 1 orbit of UV spectroscopy with COS *** As with our other programmes, we request that the SBC amplifiers have been turned off for the three orbits prior to our visits. This allows the SBC to cool and 'reset' the Dark Current to its minimum before our observations begin. *** For the same reasons of Dark Current, the 19 orbits of SBC imaging are split over 9 visits of 2 orbits and 1 visit of 1 orbit. 8 x 2 orbit visits in F125LP and F140LP step over 16 positions on a 4x4 grid spaced by 3 arcsec. At each position 2 exposures are obtained in each filter that are offset by a manually defined dither that steps over the occulting bar but maintains 1/2 pixel sampling. For the visits that use F125LP and F140LP, the F125LP observation must be conducted in earth shadow. Postflashing is used for WRC3/UVIS and ACS/WFC ramp filter observations in order to mitigate CTE effects. The level is determined by the appropriate ETC. ETC runs have assumed the GALEX FUV and NUV magnitudes, both of which are 18.8 (AB). Thus the continuum is flat in f_nu (equivalently, beta=-2). All ETC runs, for both ACS/SBC and COS/NUV imaging and FUV spectroscopy have been computed with these quantities. COS observations use the PSA, ACQ/IMAGE, and MIRROR 1. Acquisition time is 13 seconds for SNR=40 assuming a point-source. Spectroscopic observations use G130M, CENWAVE=1327, TIME-TAG, and all FP-POS settings to reduce fixed-pattern noise. Currently the single COS visit is on hold. The reason is that the above calculations are based upon GALEX photometry; this can be very much improved, especially for the acquisition procedure, if we have HST FUV and ~U-band photometry, which will be obtained by the imaging parts of the proposal. When we have the UVIS/F390W and an ACS/SBC visit completed, we will immediately obtain the data and perform the photometry and calculations to optimize the COS visit, and release the hold.
