This is a question that has motivated numerous observational and theoretical efforts to search for and explain the phenomenon over the last eight years. However, recent work by our team and others indicates that some previous claims of thermal inversion detections based on Spitzer data are ambiguous at best, and even wrong in some cases. On the other hand, new WFC3 spectroscopy data have suggested that other hot Jupiters may indeed have thermal inversions, thus reigniting an old debate. We propose here to characterize the best remaining thermal inversion archetype suggested by Spitzer observations. We will measure the thermal emission spectrum of the transiting hot Jupiter HAT-P-7b by observing secondary eclipses with WFC3. The WFC3 spectrum will unambiguously reveal the thermal structure of the planet's atmosphere and definitely test the influential thermal inversion hypothesis. It is of vital importantance to get to the bottom of this issue now. If thermal inversions as we have been envisioning them are a real phenomenon, then the community will want to study the question of their origin in more detail with JWST. However, if the previous claims were spurious and we continue to believe that this is a problem worth investigating, then we will be following a blind alley with early JWST observations. We have a chance to address the influential thermal inversion hypothesis today with HST, and thus to establish the best foundation for the exciting future ahead with JWST. This program is focused on secondary eclipse observations of the exoplanet HAT-P-7b. There will be two visits of five orbits each. The sequence for each visit will be two orbits out of eclipse, two orbits in eclipse (eclipse duration is 196 minutes), and one orbit out of eclipse. Both visits will be done with the G141 grism and using bi-directional spatial scanning. Each orbit begins with a direct image through the F126N filter for wavelength calibration. All observations are using the GRISM256 subarray. The observations must be precisely scheduled to catch the eclipses. I have given a +/- 10 minute window on the phase constraint and used the schedulability=40 for this first submission.
