Receipt: # 15118-1 ----- Attempting Submission 2 (Mon Jul 17 15:38:35 GMT 2017) ----- TESTING THE RELEVANCE OF MERGERS AND ENVIROMENT FOR THE FASTEST GROWING BLACK HOLES IN THE MOST INTENSELY STAR FORMING GALAXIES We propose a pilot study to explore the role of major galaxy mergers in shaping the early history of the largest super-massive black holes (SMBHs). We will use HST's high sensitivity and resolution to map the stellar content of the host galaxies and close environments of six very luminous QSOs at z~4.8, for which we have obtained a rich collection of ground- and space-based data, including new ALMA data that probe the hosts' gas. Our previous analysis of these systems clearly shows fast SMBH and host galaxy growth, with some systems exhibiting extremely high star formation rates, SFR >2000 M_sol/yr, suggestive of merger-driven activity. Our new ALMA data show evidence for mergers among some of the lower-SFR objects, while presenting no clear evidence for mergers among some of the extreme SFR sources. The deep HST/WFC3-IR imaging data will allow us to look for two types of merger indicators: (1) disturbed star-forming sub-structures within the host galaxies of the QSOs, and (2) close, possibly interacting companions. Thus, the proposed HST observations will provide the only missing ingredient in our long-term effort to identify the dominant mechanism driving the early epoch of SMBH-host (co-)evolution. If successful, the combined HST and ALMA effort will be extended to a larger sample, based on our on-going ALMA cycle-4 observations of 12 additional systems. We will observe six quasars at z~4.8 using WFC3/IR, with the goal of detecting the host galaxies of the quasars, as well as companion (interacting) galaxies across the WFC3/IR FoV. In particular, we are interested in several companion galaxies detected in our ALMA data (in three of the targets). We stress that the bright quasar targets themselves are _not_ the primary science drivers, and so some (mild) saturation in the peak pixels would not jeopardize our science. Each target will be observed for 2 orbits, using a single filter (F140W). We will use a 4-position "box" dithering pattern in order to be able to fully sample the PSF, and to use MultiDrizzle/DrizzlePac to improve the resoltion of the final imaging data products. We will use the "STEP100" log-linear-readout sequence mode, in each dithered position, to ensure that the PSF is properly sampled (given the brightness of the quasar point-like sources). Each of these sequences will last about 300 sec, except for the two brighter targets, where the sequence will last 200s. With appropriate number of iterations over the dithering patterns, we will have 2400 seconds of exposure time per orbit. Each target will thus be observed for about 4800 seconds over the two orbits (visits) devoted to it.
