Reconnaissance of the Hottest Neptune-Class Planet Transiting a Bright Parent Star We propose to use 8 orbits of HST time to observe three transits of the recently discovered hot Neptune HD 219666 b using WFC3/G141. The first goal of these observations will be to determine the degree to which the presence of clouds can mute the spectral features, and specifically gauge its suitability for JWST atmospheric observations. This motivates our request for mid-cycle time, since we wish to ascertain HD 219666 b's cloudiness prior to the re-submission of the JWST GTO targets in July 2019. Second, and more broadly, we wish to determine the degree of envelope metal enrichment (e.g., its metallicity). These measurements will probe chemical processes in HD 219666 b's atmosphere and shed light on its formation, adding a critical piece to our sparse understanding of hot Neptunes. These observations are a pair of tranist observations of the planet HD 219666 b using WFC3/G141 in grism scanning mode. I have patterned these observations off the WASP-18 WFC3/G141 observations described in Arcangeli+2018, who used GRISM512, NSAMP=15, and SPARS10. The combination of GRISM512 and SPARS10 is not an officially supported combination according to both APT and the WFC3 handbook (Table 7.9), but the Contact Scientist for these observations (Kevin Stevenson) has approved the use of GRISM512/SPARS10 for these observations. I have split each transit observation up so that each orbit is its own visit in APT (and we need 4 orbits per transit). Making each orbit its own "visit" forces WFC3 to do a full buffer dump during occulation, which allows us to then observe continously with the 512 subarray during the following orbit. Making a "traditional" observing plan where all 4 orbits per transit are in a single visit doesn't trigger the full buffer dump during occulatation, and so for orbits #2, #3, and #4 we get a full dump in the middle of the time when the target is visible and lose about 6 minutes of observing time. I've sequenced the individual orbit-visits so that they should be forced to all occur immeditately after the first orbit-visit in each group. That is, Transit 1.1, Transit 1.2, Transit 1.3 and Transit 1.4 should all go one after the other, so that we get 4 continous orbits for Transit 1 (which starts based on the phase contraints on Transit 1.1). This is patterned after GO-13338, who did the same one orbit per visit scheme to force buffer dumps.
